yes, statistically speaking prep doesnt give you 100% protection. in life you'll rarely find things that give you 100% protection.

there are many things people pursue on a daily basis that carry a risk (sex, cars, alcohol, tobacco, sports, weed - you name it. ) but that shouldnt stop you from enjoying them ...  (granted you're taking precautionary measures)

You are though and it sounds like you're trying to convince yourself more than anything that it's okay to not practice safe sex. If that's your thing fine, but I think it's irresponsible to encourage people to not use condoms and treat prep as ironclad cure-all solution.

And how about stop spreading fake news that Prep is less safe than condoms? I literally see in this thread a good amount of slut-shaming.

lol now you're imagining things. i havent encouraged anybody to do anything,  i was simply saying that things are handled differently overseas. honestly i was rather shocked how people on here were shaming this guy for a perfectly sane decision he made. just read the comments on the first and second page. thats horrible. you cannot expect everybody in this world to like condoms and shame them when they dont - im telling you, real life is not how you guys picture it to be. thankfully, we now have a very safe and reliable method to prevent hiv infection that isnt a barrier method. as an adult he made the decision to go for this method and its just downright cruel to judge him for his decision when he just received these horrible news. if he was using condoms and got infected, you guys wouldnt make all these slut shaming comments.

You're spending your time telling people they are "uninformed" or "judgemental" for saying prep isn't a perfect solution and we should be practicing safe sex... It's incredibly irresponsible and not what the drug is intended for. Prep is to lower your chances of contracting it, not a magical device that allows you to have unsafe sex without considering the consequences.

NOT TO MENTION all the STIs you can contract through unsafe sex. To take a pill and pretend like there's no risk in unsafe sex is completely irresponsible regardless of your geographic location. You are putting others at risk and just like with Prep and condoms, there are no guarantees that your partner has a regular testing regimen or didn't contract anything in the 6 months between visits.

I don't think you're going to be able to convince people that not using condoms is responsible because prep exists...but go off sis.

So you guys are just going to ignore STIs then got it. Prep is 100% less safe than condoms when it comes to anything other than HIV...

I don't see how slut shaming is saying have all the sex you want but be safe and responsible about it  and consider the health of yourself and others in the community when you are doing your thing.

Also it's annoying that people are even saying slut anything. Safe sex has nothing to do with the amount of partners and isn't just for people having sex with multiple partners. ANYONE having sex has to consider the risks.

Miracle

Use condoms. Bareback sex is never okay if you are not in a closed relationship with a person that's tested.

Lmao where did anyone say PrEP is less safe than condoms? All people are trying to point out is that it’s only 92% effective (which if you don’t believe me then look it up, the CDC has a whole page devoted to it) & shouldn’t be used as a solution. & if you’re only taking it once in awhile when you plan to have sex then you’re chances of contracting HIV DRASTICALLY rise. You need to take it everyday for it to be as effective as it can & the guy in the article didn’t. He got HIV because he was using PrEP incorrectly by not taking it everyday & treating it as a cure all solution is irresponsible & spreading that type of incorrect info puts others at risk & I don’t want someone reading your comments & thinking they only need to use PrEP once in awhile & they’ll be safe. Condoms aren’t 100% no one here is denying that, all we’re trying to get through to you is that PrEP isn’t either & shouldn’t be used as such & literally this article is proof that it shouldn’t be used as such especially incorrectly like the guy in the article did. Don’t use condoms, that’s your issue but don’t sit here & tell others not to use them or that PrEP is a cure all solution when it’s not.

PReP is important, and I’m an advocate for it... I am skeptical of the on-demand method however... which is how this guy was taking it when he got HIV.

I know there have been studies, but I feel much safer just taking it everyday.

Yeah, doctors & studies have all said that the on-demand method increases your chances of contracting HIV. In order to get the full effectiveness of PrEP you need to take it everyday so just keep taking it everyday like you’ve been. It builds up in your system & creates a bubble around your T-cells & by taking it sporadically your body won’t have enough. PrEP is only 92% effective (says the CDC) as it is & you don’t wanna lower that by taking it on-demand like this guy because, well, need I say more?

Didn’t you say that you stop answering me?

There are never statistically 100%. According to the HPTN 052 study Prep is 96% safe. I never said that people should take it once in a while. It needs to be taken correctly, just as condoms need to be used correctly.

I also never told anyone what to do. That’s what everyone else is doing. The case in the OP is extremely rare, such as getting HIV with a condom.

To add to the point about contracting STIs when not using condoms. This is exactly how strains of other STIs like the Super Gonorrhea was developed. Because people don't think it's a big deal to get other STIs since many of them can be cured from meds, but then they begin to develop resistance or even immunity to our current medication. What if one day we can't even cure these other STIs, and we end up having to worry about multiple incurable diseases.

only gonorrhea is problematic concering mdr (multi-drug-resistance). mdr gonococci have been around since before prep and are a result of single-drug-therapy. nowadays, we combine two antibiotics (azithromycin and ceftriaxon i.v.) to halt this development.

chlamydia/mycoplasm are still highly susceptible to doxycyclin/azithromycin

treponema pallidum (syphilis) is still highly susceptible to benzathin penicillin g (70 years and still no resistant strain)

PrEP IS LESS SAFE THAN CONDOMS! Should I say it louder for those in the back?

Condoms protect against all STIs, PrEP protects against one. A simple concept that you clearly understand.

If I had to choose one, I would choose condoms every single time.

Bareback sex with strangers is NOT SAFE, and likely never will be! That is not slut shaming, it's a fact.

This guy should have been using condoms. He was using PrEP, so it's not his fault he contracted HIV, but anything else he contracted? 100% his fault. Which is, again, not slut shaming. Telling people they can get STI's from having unprotected sex is responsible. Telling people PrEP is as safe as condoms? Irresponsible. Honestly it should not be allowed on a forum full of impressionable gay teenagers.
