MILAN (Reuters) - A bus full of schoolchildren was hijacked and set on fire by its own driver on Wednesday in an apparent protest against migrant drownings in the Mediterranean, Italian authorities said.

All 51 children managed to escape unhurt before the bus was engulfed in flames on the outskirts of Milan, Italy’s business capital. Police named the driver as Ousseynou Sy, a 47-year-old Italian citizen of Senegalese origin.

“He shouted, ‘Stop the deaths at sea, I’ll carry out a massacre’,” police spokesman Marco Palmieri quoted Sy as telling police after his arrest.

One of the children told reporters that the driver had threatened to pour petrol over them and set them alight. One of group managed to call the police, who rushed to the scene and broke the bus windows to get everyone to safety.

It's the seeds of hate that Lega planted all over Italy against immigrants that caused this poor man to lose himself.. but poor kids, they had to deal with that scary moment :(

Many of us are part of a still targeted minority too, but we're not going around threatening to kill straight people's children.

I know, but some individuals are not in the right mental and education state of mind to understand that there other way, it's a cry for help, I'm not justifying he's behavior but I "understand" from where it coming from..

And it's better not to be an immigrant atm in Italy..

It goes to show just how important mental health is in our society and removing that stigma.

Its sad that if someone reveals a bad thing (example: being attracted to kids but not harming them or doing anything) that psychologists turn them into authorities. If someone comes to a professional for help, it means they want to do the right thing.

I hope some day that mental health will be an important issue, it WILL help prevent and reduce things like this. Also, more of an emphasis on critical thinking skills in education.

What??????? If someone is attracted to kids (and hasn't done anything) they get reported to authorities?

Not sure what country he's speaking of but in the US at least, there are protocols where mental health professionals can have people (temporarily, usually 3 days max) involuntarily committed to a hospital/psychiatric facility if they report that they are a threat to themselves, others, or persons of vulnerable populations (i.e. elderly, children, disabled)

Mental health professionals don't contact the police based on such a disclosure , but they have a duty to report and warn potential victims if specific plans are revealed.

Yeah same here in Canada. When I tried to commit suicide I also had to be in the hospital for 72H minimum (3 days). The rest of the time I spent in mental health in-patient at the hospital was technically voluntary. It was nice tho. That whole section tended to us extremely well and we have classes we did together etc. The only thing that sucked was not being allowed to have a bunch of stuff like shoe laces, my razor for my face and even our phones. But at least there was some entertainment there and staff were super nice

Back on topic I was refering specifically to what he said about kids. I've never heard that before

“Many jurisdictions have passed mandatory reporting regulations for psychologists and other health care providers. Consequently, when someone who thinks he might be a pedophile comes in for counseling or therapy, the psychologist may be compelled by law to report the person to the authorities. That, of course, can lead to loss of the person’s job, family, and everything else. So, these people have simply stopped coming in at all, and instead of getting help to them, we now have pedophiles circulating in society receiving no support at all.”

Awakened M

Reading the title sent my heart and mind into a downward spiral. I'm glad the kids made it out, but I'm worried for their mental health...

I'm not getting any sleep tonight because I woke up to a beautiful life. I'm awake.
