Gaga's connections to the urban scene

I've worked out that, for a popstar, Gaga's sure been involved in a lot of urban music, whether its using it herself, featuring an urban artist, being featured on an urban artist's song, being called out in a song from an urban artist or mentioned by an urban artists, so I decided to compile a list of all these times, in as close to chronological order as I can.

Using urban music in her solo work

Second Time Around - pre-2008, unreleased song (hip pop/RnB)

Paper Gangsta - 2008, The Fame (hip pop/RnB)

Cake Like Lady Gaga - 2012, standalone unreleased song (trap/rap)

Partynauseous - 2014, standalone, unreleased song, solo version of a song originally going to be on Kendrick Lamar's debut album (pop/dance/industrial/trap)

The Cure - 2017, standalone single (pop/RnB)

Heal Me - 2018, A Star Is Born soundtrack (pop/RnB)

Why Did You Do That? - 2018, A Star Is Born soundtrack (hip pop/RnB)

Hair Body Face - 2018, A Star Is Born soundtrack (hip pop/RnB)

Using an urban artist on a feature

Starstruck feat. Space Cowboy & Flo Rida - 2008, The Fame (hip pop)

Christmas Tree feat. Space Cowboy - 2008, standalone single (pop/hip pop)

Telephone feat. Beyonce - 2009, The Fame Monster (pop)

Do What U Want feat. R. Kelly - 2013, ARTPOP (RnB)

Jewels n' Drugs feat. T.I., Twista & Too $hort (hip hop/rap)

Featuring on an urban artist's song

Chillin' by Wale feat. Lady Gaga - 2009, Attention Deficit (hip hop/rap)

Videophone by Beyonce feat. Lady Gaga (Extended Remix) - 2009, I Am...Sasha Fierce (hip pop/pop)

3 Way (The Golden Rule) by The Lonely Island feat. Lady Gaga - 2011, The Wack Album (RnB parody)

Planned urban features that got shelved

Trina - Let Them Hoes Fight feat. Lady Gaga - 2010, Amazin' (cut due to issues with Gaga's label) (pop/hip pop)

T.I. - Lick It feat. Lady Gaga - 2010, No Mercy (didn't make final cut) (trap/hip hop/rap?)

Kendrick Lamar - Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe feat. Lady Gaga - 2012, Good King, M.A.A.D City (due to timing issues and creative differences) (hip hop/rap)

Red Flame feat. Azealia Banks - 2013, ARTPOP (cut due to fall-out between Gaga and Azealia) (trap/hip pop?)

Joint tours with urban artists

Fame Kills: Starring Kanye West and Lady Gaga - 2009-2010 (cancelled due to Kanye's MTV scandal)

Being named in an urban song

Justin Bieber - Speaking In Tongues - 2010, freestyle posted on Twitter (rap freestyle)

0:10

Eminem (as part of Bad Meets Evil) - A Kiss - 2011, Hell: The Sequel (hip hop/rap)

3:10

Missy Elliott feat. Timbaland - 9th Inning - 2012, standalone single (hip hop/rap) *thanks to @phantasmas for picking up on this one!

1.56

Cardi B feat. Bad Bunny & J Balvin - I Like It - 2018, Invasion Of Privacy (hip hop/reggaeton)

3:07:

Juice WRLD - Flaws And Sins - 2019, Death Race For Love (trap/hip hop)

1:10:

Urban artists who have complimented her

Kanye West, Janet Jackson, Usher, Twista, T.I., R. Kelly, Rihanna, Beyonce, Jason Derulo, TLC, Nile Rodgers, Mac Miller, Blac Youngsta and more.

Urban artists expressing a desire to work with her

Kanye West, Juicy J, Blac Youngsta, Lil Pump (claimed Gaga was on his new album but was trolling).

What do you think? Any I've missed out? I think it's quite amazing that Gaga gets so much love from these artists, despite her not actually being an urban act herself and not even dabbling in the music much. I think it shows how much she appeals to so many demographics.

I think she has a slightly bittersweet relationship with the rap/hip-hop world tbh. To me it dates back to her dropping the Kanye tour then subsequently dropping Cudi from opening for The Monster Ball for no valid reason. Wale had some opinions on her lack of support for him after their single together. Kendrick had nothing but positive things to say about her after they worked together but it never seemed like she reciprocated after all they worked on never saw the light of day which she alluded to his team being hesitant for him to associate with her professionally (which at that time her career was on the rocks so I guess its slightly understandable but maybe a little pussyfied nevertheless). Idk. Its only been recently that I think shes kind of gotten some love, in that Cardi track because Cardi loves her and Bad Bunny loves her as well, he even wears Gaga merch on his own time which tripped me out a bit. Gagas just never really gotten much love from that side of the industry and idk if its because shes too gay or too white or just pissed off the wrong people lol like its so obvious that Nicki hates her dude. And she didn't always but I think there was a time when Gaga felt above a lot of her peers and they felt it as well. Thus people like Nicki, Miley and Katy don't really  show her the same shout outs and love they show eachother and kind of lowkey make dragging remarks on occasion. Not that Gaga cares im sure.

I don't think you know what urban means

How? "Urban" is an umbrella term that covers just about every kind of RnB/rap/hip hop/trap music style and any style that mashes those genres together with others. It's better to have one word to cover it all. I'm a big fan of these styles and that's what I call them.

Of course, yes, I completely forgot her involvement with Kendrick. Never heard about Juicy J, though. And of course, Cake! I'll add those in.

I think it was more because Nicki clearly was a little too inspired by Gaga's style and sound during 2010-2012 and so many people called her out for it that she started to have resentment towards anyone who asked her about it because she knew they were right.

In other words, black people? :ohwell:

Honestly, I’ve noticed that Gaga has a tense and maybe even problematic relationship with the black community (in America, I don’t know about anywhere else). I used to avidly frequent urban music online boards (KanyeToThe, Genius forums) back in the early-mid 2010’s and... a lot of people (of all races, and totally straight) on those websites would make fun of Gaga for her appearance and her music by calling her “ugly” and “wack” and “gay AF”. Black twitter is surprisingly nicer to her actually. I’ve met maybe three black women and four black men in person who liked Gaga, and surely some more on the internet. I’ve always wondered why Gaga has comparatively so few black fans when she has so many white and Latino fans. Is it just too much of a culture clash? Could anybody explain this to me? It’s something I think about a lot.

You should probably not use it, it has some heavy racist connotations at best.
