DeleteMyAccount 11,881
Not sure why Americans are so obsessed with big corporations coming into their city and thinking that it'll give them everything they need. I wish people looked into the important questions regarding this, not just the shinny 25,000 jobs headlines. And like others have said, it makes more sense for Amazon to go elsewhere in the NY area where taxes are different and there's less pressure from big politicians. I thought corporations loved preying on the smaller man for the biggest gain.
PoshLife 17,019
It's hard to call it "common sense." There are some pretty big trade-offs that policy makers need to weigh when it comes to attracting these large companies to their cities. Mayors were tripping over themselves offering Amazon what essentially amount to sweetheart deals to bring HQ2 to their cities, which would have the effect of significantly reducing their property tax base. The property tax is one of the only revenue-raising mechanisms for city governments that are expected to provide police, fire, street cleaning, and countless other services to businesses and residents. Cities make the same poor decisions when it comes to attracting football teams, major developments like malls, etc. It's also important to keep in mind that the jobs HQ2 will bring to Crystal City and (perhaps) NYC are highly skilled desk jobs, which will be filled with a lot of out-of-towners moving in. Working class people who are unemployed in those cities will likely not find their next jobs at Amazon's headquarters. It would be easy to overestimate how much I care about Amazon and where it locates its next big facility. But the idea that "AOC bad, Meeks good" on HQ2 is just extremely oversimplified. Woolfsmck 2,763
25k jobs means landlords get rental income means property taxes get paid. Irregardless of where said employees move in from. The new residences also need to buy food clothes entertainment transportation ect. The. "Tradeoff" benefits both ... Anti" Large corporstion" makes no sense at all. like a cat in a sil, I observe life, moving and still. Woolfsmck 2,763
In addition.....😁 The HQ employees get paid by said Corporate income which is derived globally...so said wages are a net yearly revenue stream gain for NY...so the city incentives to attract these types of "hi skilled desk jobs" is pretty clear. like a cat in a sil, I observe life, moving and still. No it will not employ average citizens But these high payed workers will spend money on goods and services to support local Industries that employ ordinary citizens. You have to look at the multiplier effect as well. These high payed workers will have a lot of money to spend eating out, going to bars, going to other forms of entertainment maybe hire a house made cuz their job is stressful and they have the money to hire help if they are lazy to clean their apartment etc. A company this size would also need a lot of services that would help local Industries as well. An economy can't just survive on retail and restaurants. It needs money coming in as well to support the local economy NY is no longer a big manufacturing hub. It is a place where money comes in from #1 tourism and #2 corporate office type jobs Overall I think it would be a net positive for the economy I do agree that it sucks that the current economic system of fighting for the big corporations. They do not need money incentives to go to a specific city but many want them so bad they compete for it and in that sense I don't like seeing that But to say it's debatable whether it's good for the economy or not I disagree. It may have a few downsides like higher traffic or higher local rent but on a net basis I think the benefits far outway the cons

I think the objection is the tax breaks that Amazon will get for the start up and move in costs...but like your post outlines....the actual HQ building is only a fraction of the total package that having a large central corporate hub brings. like a cat in a sil, I observe life, moving and still.
