Awrah999 4,379
So I posted a few thoughts in another thread but just wanted to expand on them because I’m obsessed. I just left the Encore version in Dolby at a sold out NYC theater! I loved it even better than the original. There were a few scenes that blended the narrative a bit better, especially during the songwriting/touring phase that I thought was slightly rushed in the original. I LOVED the Diggin My Grave on stage, songwriting of Clover (I need an official audio!), drunken karaoke to Midnight Special, the 3 second Chinese takeout clip with Ally&Pepper (I got hungry af ), and the zip line scene (her hitting his head with it made the whole theater burst out laughing ). Hearing the extra few seconds of “sha ha sha ah low” in the parking lot going right into the green peas “was this supposed to help me?” was also so cute and made the on stage performance of Shallow even more believable (I always wondered how they just came up with that rah rah sh*t on the spot)... Scenes that were just ok and understandably cut were the extra small talk with the Roy Orbison tribute performer, Jack’s counselor, the 2-3 extra lines from Chappelle (although I think he was great!), and the scene with Jack on his headphones playing piano chords of I’ll Never Love Again (he does it again later so it seemed slightly redundant). The quick scene of Ally planning her world tour with all her glittery outfits was too Super Bowl/Joanne Word Tour-esque that I saw Gaga more than Ally in that scene, so I’m glad it was cut! The true gem of this extra footage though is clearly “Is That Alright?”—it was such an emotional part of the film and felt so genuine. Gaga’s voice gave me chills and, even though I’ve seen this film 15 times before and saw the scene on my iTunes version, seeing it in the theater in the context of their wedding and vows made me cry Everyone in my theater was raving about that song afterwards! I’m going to need an official release of this encore/director’s cut because that scene alone takes this film to another level. All in all, I fell in love with this film all over again and it was so amazing to hear people laughing, bopping in their seats, crying, and then praising the film afterwards. I really think the extra few seconds here and there really smoothed some previously slightly disjointed parts and made the narrative of Ally/Jack falling in love on the road so much more beautiful and believable, culminating in some amazing, heartfelt tracks like Always Remember Us This Way and Is That Alright. One thing I still don’t understand after all 16 viewings () of this film are what happened with Jack being replaced as the Grammy performer(did Bobby arrange it...wtf is he saying? ). One thing that I finally picked up on in this viewing was that the girl at the rehab facility (after Ally/Jack talk) is NOT hugging a tree/plant as I kept thing all 15 prior times...she’s writing on something and the plant is behind her. I thought she was like mentally not right and making besties with foliage Anyway thanks for reading! All comments are welcome, and yes I need to go see it again and already have my tickets for Monday!

I've always taken that to mean he was replaced because his "star" or fame is on the decline while hers is on the rise. They gave it to him originally but then pulled out because they thought he either wasn't a good fit anymore or thought the others could do it better. I hope that makes sense lol

We get maybe about 10-15 seconds extra in the beginning of Gaga singing in a nice, soft voice—it’s hard to make out what she says as it pans from far away. The best part of the song/clip is in the Kimmel video though!

youandi 2,110
Despite making it longer, does it do a lot to help the pacing issues? A coworker last night was saying he enjoyed it but thought that the jump from her being budding songwriter to Grammy winner was too jarring. I didn't necessarily see it like that because I loved the film but I did feel like some of the pacing was off
Red 98,235
Ugh this cut seems so much better, I hate deleted scenes If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

Gagally 775
Wow, thank you for posting. From the very first time I saw the film in the theater, i felt it was rushed and unnatural in terms of timing. I can not wait to go see this today. What a shame there is no market for longer movies. I wonder if this version was the only one if Cooper coulda won more awards? Ziggy 12,011
I actually thought the parking lot scene was too long and slow so I get why it was trimmed even though it *did* provide understanding for how the song got written so fast. She just kept going on and on; idk it felt slow and a little eh to me. Then yeah the Orbison tribute extension was mercifully cut in the final version since it added nothing haha I all in all liked it, too. It was interesting seeing now a third version of this movie after the pre-screening a year ago then the official version and now this.

I don’t remember that scene specifically but I want to say it was either during Midnight Special or the later scene when Bradley plays INLA with his headphones in. Sorry it was kind of a blur! 20 hours ago, youandi said: Despite making it longer, does it do a lot to help the pacing issues? I didn't necessarily see it like that because I loved the film but I did feel like some of the pacing was off Yes it definitely does! I can understand why people feel the movie is already long so these scenes were understandably cut, but the additional scenes for the most part so help to transition things better, particularly during the beginning stages when their romance/music writing really flourishes. Seeing them do more things on the tour bus, writing Clover, and performing Diggin My Grave made the rise to public superstardom feel more realistic. 20 hours ago, hpmcmill said: Awesome - thank you!
