I thought so too but since I've started looking at radio audiences etc I'm astonished that a song can get like 150m+ audience in the US.

Well yeah it's real but it's illegal. A radio deal is legal though and it's for lead singles on their release day.
OBEY 57,109
I figure radio is a bit like Live television ; some young people listen to it, but the majority uses on demand streaming services. However, adults and older people still use it.

The fact that a radio deal only lasts 1 day and actually happens. Payola doesnt happen and theoretically wouldnt last a day because that would do nothing. Arturo 40,746
Pulse Music Board members are a bit pressed. Some of them asked if Shallow will have the biggest fall from #1 (it won’t come close) Another asked if Shallow will miss the 2019 year end which would be unusual for a #1. On Year end predictions its #24 and thats BEFORE it went #1, so expect it in the teens. Its guaranteed a spot in the Top 20 let alone the Top 100 Those idiots, I made an account just to drag them in a bit.
Doot 2
Interesting to know: “Payola to DJs is less of a concern today because they rarely are involved in choosing the songs. Modern radio is widely based on company-delivered playlists, often scheduling every song, commercial break, and DJ talk time, and most shows are pre-recorded well in advance of their broadcasts. Especially with shows that are voicetracked from elsewhere where an off-air assistant may choose the playlists rather than the DJs themselves, local radio staff have little to no input on a playlist outside of special but rare segments where a local artist might be spotlighted, or contests where local artists are offered the opportunity to open a station-sponsored concert or music festival for more well-known acts.”
Doot 2
“A different form of payola has been used by the record industry through the loophole of being able to pay a third party or independent record promoters ("indies"; not to be confused with independent record labels), who will then go and "promote" those songs to radio stations. Offering the radio stations "promotion payments", the independents get the songs that their clients, record companies, want on the playlists of radio stations around the country. The loophole has made it sure that independent artists will be isolated from mainstream media. And a current example of this is the lengths Macklemore and Ryan Lewis went to get their music heard. Because Lewis and Macklemore belonged to an independent label, they feared payola laws would interfere with their airtime. So they “hired an independent arm of Warner Music Group, the Alternative Distribution Alliance, which helps independent acts get their stuff on radio. Zach Quillen, manager of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, discussed how "they paid the alliance a flat monthly fee to help promote the album."”

2HB 536
When do radios usually update their playlist? Like if a radio station decides to put a song into power rotation, is there a specific day of the week where they tend to do it?
