MEM 3,114
Sorry if this has been answered before; I just can't be bothered searching GGD history... Of course she killed it, but that was after a six-month training with a classical vocal coach - even Gaga didn't trust herself completely. I've tried Googling and I can't seem to find reports about how Lady Gaga was chosen specifically to do The Sound Of Music tribute? The Oscar producers at the time (Craig Zadan & Neil Meron) said they wanted to honor the film on their 50th anniversary and wanted to make sure it was a 'modern' tribute, but I wonder how Gaga crossed their minds, especially since Carrie Underwood had just done the NBC musical for it and also there were a ton of musical theatre people who were big at the time, say like Idina Menzel or Kristin Chenoweth or Lea Michele, even. I get that Gaga had already done C2C at this point and was getting into the more jazz, classy outfits era, but from what I've read, it still shocked a lot of people to see her at the Oscars doing this particular medley, just out of the blue. Was she even known for her voice at this point in time? Had the 'meat dress' persona faded by then? Does anyone have any specifics on this? I'm so happy for what it did for her career, but I'm so curious as to how she got the chance to do it and I want to hug everyone involved.

freebit 6,240
When she showed up to the Oscars in 2014, the same two guys were producing that year's ceremony, and I remember they were tweeting about being ready for her in the audience and seemed excited, so I feel like they must have really liked her. The jazz album was probably just the cherry on top the cake that helped her stay fresh in their minds. 29 minutes ago, SFDMQ said: Mr Carino? 20 minutes ago, GypsyBabe said: Maybe Mr. Xtian She joined CAA after her globe win in early 2016, so CarinNO wasn't on her team yet back then. YourWhiskyMouth 4,014
Tony Bennett and Cheek to Cheek/the PBS special quadrupled her credibility in the music industry at large outside of current pop Top 40 segment. Plus her name in classic music was still new enough to provide shock factor while being backed by enough proven talent at that point to be a guaranteed hit production.
