Shallow Wasn't Meant for Success - A Rant on Promo Singles

OP: This is not a Gaga album. You can’t compare the decisions that were made for her official albums with a soundtrack.

They perform it many times on stage, there’s  clips of them singing Shallow for like 10-30 seconds while “on tour” if I remember correctly

I’ll Never Love Again is so generic and uninteresting. It was purposely made for the sake of pulling the viewers heartstrings after Jackson’s death. And it has the same formula and style as all of Dianne Warren’s ‘90s ballads. Til It Happens to You was a lot better in my eyes. INLA was far too calculated.

Also, calling Shallow a monster hit but calling Applause a flop?  Applause peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, while Shallow peaked at #5. Additionally, Applause has proven itself to have longetivity, with many radio stations still playing the song occasionally even today. I still hear it at work sometimes. I even hear it at the mall every once and a while. I don’t think Shallow is gonna be as well remembered 5.5 years later.

Shallow has become and will continue to be a singing competition staple. Shallow is bigger in many countries outside the US.

If you live in a little US bubble this is true (even then, the low peak in US is only because of radio), meanwhile Shallow has been #1 in 18 countries (Atleast 2 weeks in all of them), is one of the most nomminated/awarded songs ever and is going towards 1 billion streams on both spotify and youtube. Applause wishses to be even half as successful as Shallow

It’s only been a little over four months since Shallow came out, so it’s too soon to say that. As for your second point, I’ll take your word for it. What country are you living in?

Well, as an American myself, I’m only speaking about what I know from first-hand experience. If Shallow is a mega success in Europe, then I believe you.

However, here in the USA, Applause at 5.5 years old is more well-remembered than what Shallow will likely be once it’s the same age.

Judas didn't even flop....It literally debuted in the top 10 in the US and hit the top 10 in 30+ countries. Its 2x Platinum. It just underperformed more than her previous singles. Her first flop was Marry The Night tbh.

I seem to remember that it was released early to mitigate the effects of a leak. That it was Easter was just a coincidence.

He performs Maybe It's Time at the drag bar, how could he have sung Shallow at this point in the movie when he had just met Ally?

Every radio station was listing INLA as coming up right at the time of the album release. No one listed Shallow yet. Shallow's impact date was 16th of October iirc. INLA was already sent before that and was playlisted starting the week of the release of the soundtrack. they paused those plans and pushed Shallow instead because it blew up more than they expected.

I believe they never thought of giving single treatment to any song from the soundtrack.

They released Shallow in order to get some promo and maybe the Oscar nom, but I don't think they pictured it to be the hit it is today.

From what I see, I feel like when they saw Shallow getting some succes they tried to promote INLA also but then they decided it was best to have one monster.mp3 hit that two modderate successes.

Just my guess tho lol. But yes, Shallow is still the stellar song on the film for me.
