The real full 80's revival smashed into public conscience with Bruno Mar's Unorthodox Jukebox but it started before that. There is a definite 60s soul feeling to F*ck You. I don’t think it was a 2011 specific thing, there were plenty of acts from the 2000s up to now even that evoked the Motown/doo wop/60s: Amy Winehouse, Duffy, OutKast, DreamGirls the movie, Sean Kingstons “Beautiful Girls”, Meghan Trainor even etc. I don’t think the 80s has ever really come back, it’s always been more sporadic influences here and there rather than a full on comeback. I think Gaga did try to bring the 80s back in 2011, as on Born This Way she incorporated many of the diverse aspects of the 80s: glam metal, funk and industrial rock, so it doesn’t just sound like a cliche throwback, but the public just weren’t ready for it. I think for too many people “the 80s” means one thing or one sound (usually disco/new wave/synthpop) but Gaga was able to show the diversity of 80s music as each song sounds different, yet the entire album is cohesive aesthetically and thematically. The 80s will probably have it’s “real” comeback next decade and the 2000s and 2010s gave people a taste of what’s to come. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
