Hopefully they are laying off the people responsible for shi*tty content, but somehow I doubt it. They'll probably be nixing the more serious journalists, and that's sad.

They're doing both. I've seen a lot of people from BuzzFeed News claiming they got fired and lots of people from their lifestyle outlets claiming they got fired. I was actually watching a video yesterday on their Tasty channel with a producers that is now unemployed.

I've seen a (still) employed BuzzFeed producers criticize the sh*t out of this descision since most people that got laid off were people of color.
