She needs to court young Democrats who tend to support policies like this, plus the votes of DSA members - esp if Bernie doesn’t jump in. At this point it’s too late for Warren to move to the center; her only viable path to the nomination is by courting far left votes. 27 minutes ago, LateToCult said: I can see younger voters and the more left leaning people supporting this strongly but will it be enough for them to show up and vote for her in the primaries over Bernie or a younger candidate? Tbh probably not. "I'm going to take money away from rich people" doesn't seem like a very...I don't know...energizing or inspiring campaign platform to start with right out of the gate. In my opinion, if you want to beat Trump in 2020, you either have to go the super-inspirational route (i.e. Obama, Bernie) or you have to be a fear-monger like the orange buffoon himself. Elizabeth Warren doesn't seem to fall into either category.

You think "tax the wealthy" is "uninspiring" and will not "energize" enough voters to beat Trump -- but you also think that Bernie is, in your own words, "super-inspirational"? I'm fairly confused. She's getting ready to stage a campaign very much in the light of Bernie's 'Our Revolution' (which is now his super PAC btw but whatever ). To me, your own contradiction makes me think that you just find her perhaps unlikeable, shrill, and/or bossy. Sips tea. Choices.
hankhatesyouall 2,731
Well, this is pure theft that is being normalized. Basically, you are supposed to give away your assets even if you do not accrue any investment gains. She should consider moving to communist countries. Batwings 12,957
What's really funny is that the GOP is always talking about longing for the good ol' days of midcentury America, but that was also the point when the rich were taxed like crazy, and the U.S. was prosperous, and the middle class grew. It's only been in the post-Reagan era where rich Republicans have tried to convince people that this system was uneffective.

All the rich people gonna move to China instead. The only thing that is propping our economy up now is the fact that the we have worlds reserved currency, take that away and that's it for us. When they star getting health problems because of chinas smog, also the smog is gonna get worst. They will move back to clean US lands.

America was a second-world country before WW II. That's exactly why Trump uses Reagan's campaign slogan. America peaked during Reagan years. The US enjoyed a cute ASIB-like repeak during the Clinton era, but he was lucky to benefit from the dot-com craze (although, we should give him credit for propelling the US tech industry with swift and smart regulatory actions). Petie Estie 5,706
Nobody understands the issues facing our economy better than Warren. She's literally studied and taught this field for years. People are mad at the rich for good reason. The working class is constantly being taken advantage of and protections are stripped away in favor of reaganomic ideas that have eroded the middle class for decades now. This proposal is morally, financially, and politically perfect for the moment the country is in right now. I don't see how anyone beats her in the primary if she keeps this up. Call your therapist...it's Petie Estie

I think some people unfortunately only find men to be inspirational in language. I think it’s a cultural thing. I’m a former Bernie supporter And I find Warren to be quite the inspiring. This policy would be great imo and I think the only flaw is she didn’t lay out specially what she’d do with the money. If she said she’d do this and it’d go universal college and childcare or the money would go to a jobs guarantee, her message would be even better. Either way, almost def voting for her in the primary.

swordstalker 1,829
I’m not well versed in wealth tax but I do have some questions. 1. How do countries value non liquid assets? Say I own a private business in a new field, how is the value of my business determined? It’s not as simple as determining the book value because that doesn’t account for future earnings. 2. How does the government plan on re-incentivising investment into capital intensive industry? Let’s say I have a business that has ballooned into something valued at $50m but isn’t yet profitable. Having to take out $1m in debt just to pay a wealth tax seems excessively punitive and disincentivises investment. The long term growth of an economy is determined by investment activity, not consumption. There are a whole host of other tangential questions and I would be very interested in knowing how these concerns can be addressed.

You should educate yourself about socialism before ever wanting socialism again. I don't have a problem with ultra-rich people if they acquired their wealth legally (no corruption or other kinds of crimes involved). Inheritance is also not an issue at all. Yes, some people have wealthy parents get over it.
