R3L04DED J 1,589
So tonight I was lucky enough to see ASIB at the cinema for the 7th time just doing my bit. And this time I really felt different about Rez Gavron. Although he was obviously not a fan of Jackson, and was quite rude to him on his final day I do believe he is a good manager! his intentions were in favour of Ally and her reputation. I almost believe he is the right kind of force needed during the ARTPOP era because he trusts her as a writer first and foremost, but he knows how to keep everything in check and running smoothly. As he said he was in ‘major triage’ following the Grammys incident (wow I’m so embedded in this I’m literally talking about these events as if they aren’t fictional ), this is just what Gaga would have benefitted from during the ARTPOP era, this sort of scrutinising management and organisation. Not to emphasise ARTPOP, however, I do believe Gaga’s former management was iffy in the earlier years - Gaga’s rise to the Enigma she is today seems far less effortless than Ally’s did due to better management. It seems as though Ally is treated less of a Machine than Gaga was in her early eras. Gaga had to work ****ing hard to get to the top and it sometimes felt as though she was working solely with the producers and without ‘triage’ in a different sense. I am a firm believer with good management and promotion even a bad song can be, statistically, a ‘hit’. just a thought, I’d be very interested to hear other fans opinion on this. discuss. Glamourpuss 29,062
Much like real life, the manager wasn't caring about her emotional well being or what was best for her in the long term. He was just thinking from a business point of view and treating her like a cash cow.
REALITY 76,254
I still think he was a pretty shitty person, though. Sure, from a business perspective, he was great. He got Ally to be a mega pop star within a couple of months, and that's impressive, but other than that, he wasn't a good person. He lied to Jackson pretty much everytime he and him had an encounter. Not only that, but he fundamentally changed Ally, from a musical perspective. Ally used to write pop/rock/country songs with Jackson that had a lot of deep and powerful meanings, but now that she was under Rez and a larger company, she was stripped away of the thoughtfulness and depth that made her so great to begin with. She became shallow. Now, that's not to say that the songs she made under Rez and his management were bad (shallow =/= bad), but it's just objectively more surface-level than what she used to write. 🦠🧙♀️🥀📸🎉👻🕺🧟💊💖☎️🔪👤🐺🌱🌎

This. I agree 100%. I've seen it 5 times and can't like him in the slightest. He only cared about Ally for the money. she/her/hers
LaLa 19,643
Yeah, I don’t think he was good to Ally at all. When he very first met her he said “I can give you whatever you want”, but right away it was all about what HE wanted. She wasn’t comfortable with the dancers and tried to cut them but he yelled at her. He pretty rudely told her she needed to change her hair, and why? Even in that first recording session when she was clearly nervous and needing guidance he was just looking at his phone, and Jack had to step in. A good manager would have seen the trouble brewing with Jack and tried to help him, if only to help his client, but he actively tried to undercut him and was always snide (to say nothing of that last convo ) So yeah, I don’t like him lol
2School4Cool 6,434
I get your point, from a business perspective he was good at managing he and making her famous. However, disregarding how cruel he was to Jackson, he stripped away everything that was great about Ally. He took away her creativity and made her an item almost. What Rez did to Ally's music was no different than what Jackson did to her music. The only indication we have of Ally's real music taste is what she sings at the start: Jazz and show tunes - not country or rock. She was clearly just influenced by Jackson to make that style of music. Ally never showed any sign of not wanting to be a pop star or make pop music. The only thing holding her back was Jackson and her desire to please/impress him (like how she brags to him about how she cancelled the backup dancers - she clearly just did it because she thought that's what he'd want her to do). She is always hesitant to tell him things and always understates everything - but when she's at the photo shoot and doing pop things when Jackson's not around, you can tell it's what she really wants to be doing. Which if you think about it makes sense - she's a fun girl who likes to do spontaneous things (like punching the guy in the face for no reason) and goes to drag clubs. She would most likely be into more energetic, carefree pop/dance music. Plus her dad is an italian American jazz singer - she most likely wouldn't have had rock/country music playing in the house growing up to push her in that direction. I think it's a real testament to the quality of the film that we can all analyse these characters in such depth and in such different ways.

I agree with everything except the punch -- she confronted him for being a drunken fundament and he put his hands on her first.

Oh I didn't remember that sorry, but ok her punch was justified then. (I'm a flop monster and only saw the film once, forgive me Gaga)

I think it's a real testament to the quality of the film that we can all analyse these characters in such depth and in such different ways. I have to disagree. Ally's music is not just limited to jazz and show tunes: she wrote songs like Always Remember Us This Way and Look What I Found by herself, without the help of Jack. Sure, Jack did help her in the studio with LWIF, and he did make her perform ARUTW, but he didn't help her with the creation of the sound of those two songs (as far as we know). Also, what Jack and Ally did together was mutual, and it was brought out of something that was much more genuine and authentic than just wanting to use her for money for a gigantic music label. Rez didn't really care about Ally, her thoughts/emotions, or essentially anything that Ally wanted. All he cared about was making money, and he didn't care what it took for him to accomplish that goal (i.e. such as lying to both Ally and Jack). Jack, on the other hand, loved Ally and they made music/performed together out of the love they had for each other. It's not like Jack was maliciously manipulating her in any way. I also sort of have to disagree when it comes to her wanting to do all the pop stuff. Sure, she was amazed and in awe about how famous she became and how successful she was, but there were also many moments in the film where you could tell that she didn't feel comfortable with the whole "pop persona" that Rez and his team created for her (i.e. sitting and crying in the bathtub with her newly dyed hair, telling Rez that she's cutting the backup dancers, and telling Rez in the dance studio that she didn't want to lose the part of herself that was 'talented'.) That all said, I definitely respect your point of view and agree that it's a testament to the writing of the film and the acting on both Gaga and Bradley's part that we're able to take away different things from the film. 🦠🧙♀️🥀📸🎉👻🕺🧟💊💖☎️🔪👤🐺🌱🌎
