Gaga Mentions Trump in Government Hooker

In the midst of hearing Government Hooker being performed live for the first time since the Born This Way Ball, I thought I heard a lyric change. Upon further review it is clear that she changes the lyric to:

Put your hands on me 

John F. Kennedy 

I'll make you squeal, baby

Donald Trump- if you pay me

Then immediately follows this with the David Bowie I'm Afraid of Americans cover. The political commentary jumped out. Is she making a statement about how The United States has become a place that elects this kind of person? A reference to the hush money for his relationship with adult film actor Stormy Daniels? I think so. I was here for it.

I used to not hate Trump, or not care per say, but I now can't stand his way of running our country, it's like he WANTS to ruin America

I caught it and honestly I’m bored. It would’ve been different at a show like BTW which has that political tone but here that part stood out like a sore thumb and felt so unnecessary. It just seemed like she was... what’s the word. When someone brings something up or does something to appear relatable or glorify their persona... does someone know the word for this? Anyway it seemed tacky and unrelated. I can assure you no one there wanted to be reminded of America’s shitty government  or needed to be reminded of her viewpoints on it. If she felt she needed to put that in there to vent though good for her. More power to Gaga.

^Given all that's going on in the United States, I don't think it was inappropriate at all to insert this in there. Let's not be complacent, I love that Gaga is continuing to use her voice and not relegating herself to solely being an entertainer. She has influence, and I'm grateful she uses it, even if it's something subtle (but subversive) like this.

I get what you're saying, kind of like virtue signaling? I agree that it was kind of a weird tonal shift, even if incredibly brief. The show is so celebratory overall. I am a huge Bowie fan and Government Hooker is one of my favorites, so I'm a bit biased about the whole thing.

I was kind of expecting it as soon as I heard the song start up, she knows what she's doing. I don't think the placement of the song itself was perfect in relation to the setlist. I liked the dig at him though. Can't wait to see his tweet about it.

If she wanted to use her voice and be influential she should’ve done so at the super bowl when she had millions of non fans watching, not at a residency where most of the people there are her fans and already know her opinions on politics. All she did was preach to the choir, there’s no influencing in that.

Rather than sewing division and stirring more hatred when all of America is watching, she (in what was a very clever decision imo) chose instead to begin her performance with "This land is your land, this land is my land" – read between the lines, c'mon now. That's a thinly veiled response to what Trump is perhaps most famous for: his wall.

Additionally, do you really think the people going to this residency are just her fans? Maybe tonight there were more fans than non-fans, but from here on out a huge number of people, if not the majority, are going to be either casual fans, people with a new interest after ASIB, or people who just want a good time. Tonight was preaching to the choir, going forward she's preaching to the public.

I think it was really tacky 😅. I just don’t like it when artists bring politics into their performances that much especially when the concert is a experience conceptual thing it just seemed so out there....

Like she can tweet about it and speak about it all she wants but bringing it into her show the way she did was ehhh

If six words can ruin someone's night by reminding them how shitty Donald Trump is – because what Gaga is referencing here is Trump's sexual abuse history – then maybe they shouldn't be attending a Gaga concert. Literally her entire career she's pushed the limit of what is and isn't acceptable.
