Watch out Lady Gaga, here’s how Emily Blunt could win Best Actress Oscar for ‘Mary Poppins Returns’

We often talk about performers needing a path to Oscar glory – a viable series of events (the much more boring version of the Netflix show, right?) that will include hitting marks of precursors and picking up momentum. If so and so wins at the Globes, and this person surprises at SAG and someone else is snubbed for Ensemble… etc etc. It’s this theory that forms the basis of a lot of our predictions.

And the path for a certain Best Actress contender is becoming ever clearer, with Emily Blunt now a real contender to edge out the current frontrunners Lady Gaga (“A Star is Born”), Glenn Close (“The Wife”) and Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”). Below, we map out Blunt’s pathway to the Oscar podium.

Step 1: She wins at the Golden Globes

Spoiler

This is a real possibility. Currently, Colman sits atop our odds charts for Best Comedy/Musical Actress  but she stars in “The Favourite,” which is really, quite firmly, a dramedy. Blunt headlines “Mary Poppins Returns,” a full-on, out-and-out musical with huge lashings of comedy, too. If the Globes want to veer more towards the absolute definitions of their categories, they could well decide to reward Blunt and “Mary Poppins Returns” over Colman and “The Favourite.”Remember, Saoirse Ronan won for “Lady Bird” last year in a much more comedic role over Margot Robbie in “I, Tonya,” which was certainly darker and more dramatic. That same pattern could repeat this year

Step 2: She then wins at the SAG Awards

Spoiler

While Close, Colman and Gaga are all ahead of Blunt at the moment, is it really that hard to see Blunt winning this award? SAG voters clearly adore Blunt this year nominating her not once, but twice: Best Actress for “Mary Poppins Returns” and Best Supporting Actress for “A Quiet Place.” That love could boost her to the top of the Best Actress race and see her claim the award.

“The Favourite” wasn’t as loved by SAG as we thought it would be, missing out on a Best Ensemble nomination. Close features in a very small film that isn’t getting any nominations for anything besides her performance and certainly isn’t as loved as the Poppins sequel. Gaga is the issue here for Blunt, as “A Star is Born” did make the Ensemble category. However, it kind of helps Blunt that the “Poppins” cast was snubbed. You see, SAG voters love Blunt but not necessarily her film, while they endorse “A Star is Born” but not necessarily Gaga specifically. So, if “A Star is Born” wins Best Ensemble or Best Actor for Bradley Cooper, voters may feel that’s enough for that film and may wish to reward an actress they love dearly, Blunt.

Step 3: She then wins at the BAFTA Awards

Spoiler

It’s almost a certainty that Blunt will be nominated for Best Actress at BAFTA, and she could also earn a Best Supporting Actress bid for “A Quiet Place,” too. BAFTA voters have nominated her whenever they can, including for Supporting Actress in “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006) and Best Actress for “The Girl on the Train” (2016). And BAFTA voters are known for rewarding their own such as when Kate Winslet won Best Supporting Actress for “Steve Jobs” (2014) over, among others, Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”) who went on to win the Oscar.

She better be ready for that Gaga curse :vegas:

It's never going to happen. That movie has been slammed as a pointless rehash without the soul of the original.

They write one of these articles for each contender. They've been recycling their own material ever since the site was launched. :air: And I say that as someone who's been visiting it regularly for years.
