On December 10, Insight met with the former Stellar member at her cafe in Seoul. Gayoung, who runs a cafe business following Stellar's disbandment, opened up about the hardships she faced during 7 years of Stellar promotions.

Gayoung said, "At the beginning of our debut, our concept was close to cute. We received a lot of attention because we were a group produced by Shinhwa's Eric." However, Stellar did not do well for 3-4 years. The group ultimately left Eric's agency and decided to release "Marionette" with a sexy concept.

The MV producers demanded a member to "weakly leak the milk while drinking it."

The member simply followed the directions but the scene was edited in a sexual format. Gayoung said, "She couldn't drink white milk since then due to shock. She was hurt. We really did not know it was like that (during filming)."

Gayoung continued, "During 'Vibrato,' they demanded us to wear provocative clothing on the day of filming. We told them we absolutely cannot dance in that but they said, 'Just do it. Why are you complaining without even trying?' So after taking only 5 cuts, we said, 'See, it's too provocative.' But those photos went on the album."

Gayoung revealed, "When we told them, 'We don't want to do this,' they said, 'You better think of the contract with the agency.' At a young age, we were scared of that. We were afraid that we would have to pay the violation fee."

One thing that is VERY interesting is that this group particularly had a MASSIVE fanbase outside of Korea (while they were pretty unsuccessful but notorious in Korea) and when they did the "image switch" it was quite a controversy, with international (and gay) stans defending them vehemently. They even crowdfunded their last album, under the impression that this is what the members wanted when in actuality... they artificially elongated their suffering and unknowingly caused harm towards the members because they loved that "sexually liberated" concept so much.

They totally misunderstood what had actually happened. The group essentially was forced into public prostitution against their will.

i am a die-hard fan of stellar, always will be, their 2 music videos, Vibrato & Sting are probably the best things to come out of kpop, but i truly feel bad for them, seeing as they didn't want to do this at all. but they sure pushed some buttons though.

So maybe ASIB flopped in South Korea for deeper reasons than we know. Maybe the story - which exposes harsh realities within the contemporary music business - was a little unnerving for the industry people in the Kpop world :fthis:

Why is it always so black and white for some of these companies? If it's not a super cute concept, they go too sexy to the point where they harass those girl group members. :saladga:

To call them being forced to public prostitution is a bit much :lmao: Like, they were not forced to sleep with anybody and get paid for it. SMH.

Just tell it like what it is without being so bombastic about it. :smh:

It's a hyperbole but... knowing what has happened to G.NA, I'm not sure about anything in the K-Pop industry anymore. And G.NA was hugely successful with multiple #1 hits AND under a major agency.

Yeah I watched it when I was a child. :selena: That's when I first learnt how scummy the music industry can be.

Is being told to drink milk and wear sexy clothing for a MV really sexual harrassment?..

Yeah for sure it was wrong that they were made to do something they didn't want to, but sexual harrassment is a bold claim. I feel like it's used so much now that it means nothing anymore...

It is though. They are part of "sexual requests" (forcing them to spill milk from their mouths, tons of choreo that lets directors get close-ups of their butts and other body parts, making them wear sexy outfits, sometimes naked) that those members did not agree with, so it becomes a hostile environment for those affected.

I mean did anyone really think the Korean music industry would be any less gross to artists than the American music industry?
