corvus albus 38,031
I start very fast because the title says pretty much everything. 2018 was a pretty disappointing year for popular music because way too many songs sound either alike or were made by terrible people. The other problem was that pop was pretty much dead and hip hop not only ruled the charts but influenced the new music to a disturbing amount that nothing new was able to reach the charts. You were either a throwback artist (Bruno Mars; Ella Mai), Rapper (Kendrick Lamar; Drake; Post Malone), terrible person (XXXtentacion; 6ix9ne; Chris Brown), coasting off of your name (Ariana Grande; Selena Gomez) or Cardi B. Now after this tirade of negativity HERE COMES THE GOOD STUFF! (Or not ) I'm interested in how many songs you like one here @Andreu Honorable Mentions: Natural Spoiler Imagine Dragons is a decent band with a slight rock edge which makes them kinda unique in our current musical climate. The song itself is also pretty good, just not good enough. IDGAF Spoiler A great guitar line with mature lyrics and great beat but still a huge disappointment after New Rules. Call Out My Name Spoiler A haunting track that sadly didn't manage to reach the heights of his previous singles God Is A Woman Spoiler I like the music video but Ariana's sex songs are usually more .............. let's say .......... subtle and actually sexy. Trap high hats don't sound sexy. I Like It Spoiler I like the sample Bood Up Spoiler Extremely chilling and lovely lofi hip-hop/ R'n'B track. You did fine this time DJ Mustard. Ella Mai is unspectacular here. Release this with someone like Alicia Keys and it will sound a million times better. 2 10. Marry Me Spoiler Thomas Rhett is a bad artist. This song is unusually amazing for his standards and I don't just like this song because of the low expectations. This song is genuinely amazing. Great lyrics sung with sincerity by a decent singer can make you forget that the music is sometimes a bit dull. 9. One Kiss Spoiler Calvin Harris is an amazing producer, Dua has the perfect voice for this song and this groove is unstoppable. What more do you want from your summer jam? Maybe bigger chart success in the US 8. Whatever It Takes Spoiler I never hated Imagine Dragons andi absolutely love the song. Trying to always be the best no matter how hard the chore is strikes a real chord with me. 7. Feel It Still Spoiler 70's Disco song updated and more fun. Sadly we've lost another band because this will, of course, be their first and only mainstream hit 6. No Tears Left To Cry Spoiler Timbaland reimagined by Max Martin. It doesn't work that well actually but Ariana makes it work through sheer effort and personality alone. THANK GOD FOR ARIANA! 5. Bad At Love Spoiler Halsey singing about failing in love with this twinkly music in the background is fantastic and i love that she's belting here more than usual. 4. How Long Spoiler Charlie Puth is amazing and the song deserved more. Aside from that: Charlie singing basically the second part of Attention while some soft bass and funky melody plays in the background is a high point of the year. 3. New Rules Spoiler Do I really need to justify this song being here? It's fantastic, take my word for it. 2. Delicate Spoiler One of the few good songs on Reputation made it big. I was not expecting this to be honest. I thought the album pretty much burned itself alive after End Game but i'm so happy that this song was as huge as it was. Kinda wished it was bigger though. 1. Say Something Spoiler What else did you expect? I was thoroughly disappointed by Man Of The Woods but seeing this gem sneaking its way onto the year-end list made me so goddamn happy. Chris Stapleton rules the song but Justin is still fantastic. The fun, kinda bubbly, electronica production matched with the guitars and rootsier elements make this song and are one of the reasons why it is so great. The other part being the performers themselves. Just give this song a listen again. It deserves every drop of love it can get.
