Kimmo 81,335
The former Lord of the Rings actor clarified that “although my intention was to speak strongly against racism, I have no right to even imagine the hurt that is caused by hearing that word in any context, especially from a white man.” The 60-year-old actor was at a Q&A for the potential Oscar contender — which deals with issues of racism and segregation — on Wednesday night in Los Angeles alongside his costar Mahershala Ali. In a statement to PEOPLE, Mortensen apologized for his choice of words, saying, “Last night I participated in a Q&A session moderated by Elvis Mitchell following a screening of Green Book in Los Angeles. In making the point that many people casually used the ‘N’ word at the time in which the movie story takes place, in 1962, I used the full word Mortensen also said he does not “use the word in private or in public.” “I am very sorry that I did use the full word last night, and will not utter it again,” he said. https://people.com/movies/viggo-mortensen-apologizes-using-n-word/ One less on the competition for Bradley to win best actor Hottie Detector

Wolf Boy 3,396
He was using the word simply to state that people have been using it historically as a racist term, while promoting a movie about racism and people are bothered by this? Is he supposed to say “n word” when doing this? Is he 12?

Is he supposed to say “n word” when doing this? Is he 12? Exactly this. I still don't understand why saying the word "*****" out of the racial context is SUCH a problem. Seriously, I have never in my life seen this kind of taboo. And I feel like this is basically a US issue, because I've heard the word ***** and there was never such a problem. Of course you shouldn't be racist and call someone "*****", but it's not even about the word... It's about racism. To say "n-word" everytime the word ***** is referred to is too much, as if we're children who can't say the f-word. Being decent human beings is not about not using the word *****, it's about not being racist. And people don't understand the difference and that is why there will always be prejudice.
