On a serious note -  a friend of mine is in a similar situation. We talked about it many hours and in my opinion it's just an construct of society that one person needs another one. The statistics on cheating and threesomes imply that a couple of 2 has it's challenges as well. 

But I think beeing in a relationship of three people is way more work and compromisses & therefore more difficult to be successful with.

First of all, marriage can mean a different thing to each person. If they're happy and secure enough in their relationship to have a third, that's their business and not yours at all.
