"If a Lady Gaga album underperforms it's still a fan favorite because her fans are so devoted to her, but if Katy underperforms it's a giant failure and her career might be over"

Kinda true. Even at her lowest point, when she was underperforming and being scrutinized for everything she did, Gaga was still loved by many. As for Katy, everyone was bashing on her, and her fans kinda just let it happen. Katy might have had more fans overall, but they’re fickle and not as devoted to her as Gaga’s are to her.

Also, Katy’s career is far from over. The girl can still get $20M contracts lol

You can't compare Katy and Gaga. They're carreer are build on completelt diffetent personas, music, messages etc.

It's clear that reactions to what they do will always be different, but that's not to blame in any case.

Gaga has been "cancelled" and "forgotten" too during the ARTPOP era and after when the GP didn't even knew she exhisted. Katy was almost "cancelled" due to Witness but, being mostly GP friendly, she hasn't been forgotten in any way.

So, they're different. They can't be compared not even in the GP or fans reactions

Gaga has a more solid fanbase-- thus, even at her lowest she's still succeeding. But during post-BTW & ARTPOP, the media brought her name down.

REALITY

Well I mean, if you're asking this on a Gaga forum then the obvious answer is that "yes, that's true." If I'm being objective about it, an underperformance is an underperformance, no matter who you are. Because we're fans of Gaga we say, it's a "fan favorite," or it's "underappreciated," and whatever. Maybe that's true, but again, that's because we are looking at it in the eyes of fans. We are still not looking at it in an objective fashion.

The problem is that Katy has no fans, her fans were the general public. The moment Katy did an album with a small message and put a tiny part of her soul in it, people stopped caring. I don't think Katy is over, I think she is trying to be herself for once.

I like her, but she needs to sell it. The GP thinks Katy is 'too weird' and 'crazy' now, she's kind in the middle of commercial and non commercial. She needs to go full C2C era next.

That's what happens when you literally make records for the charts, the GP. :lana: You slip up, everybody leaves you and you're literally over. Gaga cultivated her image, artistry, and her fanbase so well over the years and it saved her from what's happening with Katy right now. She's niche and she knows it, and she knows she has people who's going to appreciate her material. Also, Gaga's crazy talented and a hard worker. ARTPOP happened but so was Cheek to Cheek and that Sound of Music tribute. Those propped her up during hard times.

I feel like Katy Perry is that kind of everyone-likes-her kind of artist (think Ed Sheeran, Adele, Justin Timberlake), but only artists like Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Beyonce have fanbases that devote their entire lives speculating on their every cell and every hair.

Yes. Because Gaga's worst is better than Katy's best. Katy's music has always been mediocre (unlike Gaga's) but Witness was just on another level of pure crap (again, unlike ARTPOP), so it's no wonder she is deemed as and she IS over.

ARTPOP may be the worst or second worst album of Gaga to many fans and her worst on metacritic, but it's still bette than anything Katy Perry has ever done. Gaga has a good formula of songwriting and she experiment on that in different ways/different producers. Gaga songs are never that bad you know... I'm not saying she is the queen of music, but I'd put her on a level above her contemporaries.

Sorry but being technical she has a fanbase so idk what you're talking about lol, so sick of people acting like certain artists "hAvE nO fAnZ!!!1"

hmm had a different opinion and then watched the video, he's talking about reality not fan's conceptions about whether the album was successful or not. I agree w him, Gaga had ARTPOP and look at ha now, some articles even written about how it was unfairly bashed, but I don't think Witness will be getting those same articles in a few years

Imo Gaga always excels at what she does.  Any underperformance is not due to anything she did.

I live outside the space time continuum.

We have to see what Katy will do in the next few years before this question can be answered. It's easy to look back now and think of ARTPOP as just a blimp in Gaga's career after having seen the incredible resurgence she has undergone since then, but many people DID think Gaga was over by 2014.

However, I do think it's true that Gaga's fans are much more dedicated to her. She essentially pioneered modern-day stan culture as we know it, while Katy has relied on the GP much more. It's a reflection of how ugly society is but it's a fact that once Katy lost her sex appeal (cutting her hair mainly), the public largely abandoned her.

Also it's really nice to start seeing people appreciate ARTPOP again, I'm seeing it a lot more frequently among Twitter locals and thinkpieces. Maybe that'll happen to Witness once Katy launches a successful comeback, maybe it won't...
