ryhanna 3,507
Religion is such a strange thing. People spend so much time fighting over it, but I personally don't see any merit in it at all. Yet others can find it to be something life-changing and find purpose in it. I'm not sure what to make of that. What I'm trying to say is, I don't understand it, but if she's happy with what she's found then I'm pleased for her.

Read Quran ASAP Women rights gone, LGBT rights gone, tolerance + freedom of speech gone Well, who knows, people like this could actually challenge that interpretation of Islam and popularize a more humane one My problem with replies like this is that it contributes to the fundamentalist notion that there is only "one" Islam. Educate yourself a bit (not even that much, just read Wiki pages) and you'll realize that Islam is extremely multifaceted, has various traditions within it (like Islamic mysticism which is absolutely non-violent and supportive of cultural and religious exchange), has movements like Islamic feminism in it, etc. If people in Europe and the U.S. keep contributing to this idea that Islam can't be anything else but violent, that's exactly what Muslims are gonna be picking up. We should be stimulating them to broaden their minds and reinvent Islam for themselves. This is very possible and I feel like this negativity is holding it back, creating a neverending vicious cycle. Islam is historically credited for improving the conditions for women in that time, and for sustaining a LGBT+ tolerance for centuries throughout the Middle Ages and the early modern period, compared to a Christian West where same-sex behavior was criminally punished. So this cliché of Islam being anti-woman and anti-gay is a melting pot of colonialist political effects (it was Europeans who pressured Islamic society to reject homosexuality as a lifestyle, look it up, this is actually true) and a lack of knowledge about history and contexts of space and time. Let's not give into that, aren't we supposed to be the culture that's educated and values scientific and historical findings over ideology?

Freud 5,669
This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim. This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey. All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant. I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada’ These 2 sentences trigger me - celebrate your religion but don't confuse faith with intelligence. And don't bring down other religions! You can be proud of your believe without insulting others. Edit: This song gets another meaning now...
loathereality 26,888
i am writing this from a place where religion is deeply integrated with the society and lifestyle, and I am writing this as a nonreligious person I have travelled a lot and I have seen wonderful reliigons and belief systems where everything is kept personal and there is an absence of a cetain congregation Even though I find the existance of a certain creator bogus, I have my personal beliefs of certain things that are also very bogus (nonreligious) If someone keeps it personal and sharing his/her belief with just sharing intentions with relatives/friends i am ok with it and i do not care. However, today, with religion, there are extremists, religious symbols, statements, political views, rleigious seggregation that affects many people and this is inevitable when especially monotheistic, mass media religions exist. Especially if you are a celebrity who many people idolize and look up to, you promote reliigon and you promote evey misinformation and misconception with it. This passes the sharing with relatives/friends thing. This is not the same as believing in karma or a belief on something very personal. And indirectly, you contibute to the marginalization of every people unlike you. Trust me, this may sound like a hyperbole but I live through it everyday. And, I loathe it. Every religion has forbidden LGBT right BUT to say woman had less rights in Qur’an is just beyond crazy. Sorry but you clearly didn’t read it and please don’t be islamophobic. I as a muslim woman can assure you that I have every right and maybe even more.
