Wait what? How is she a supporting actress when she's the only main character in the movie?

She's only in the second half of the movie. Half of the movie is about her childhood.

The AUDACITY of this studio not to even include Raffey Cassidy as third billing when she's in the entire movie :grr:

No. Natalie Portman sought inspiration from Gaga and Madonna in playing this role. Why would Gaga want to play a role that is basically herself in real life?

Why would she want to play a role that is basically herself in real life? Because it's working out pretty well for her so far.

She won a Golden Globe for playing a wealthy, blood soaked, fashion and art obsessed, ultra glamorous, former disco queen, and she is heading to the Oscars for playing the role of a song writer who becomes a pop star in spite of being told she isn't conventionally beautiful enough.

And when you say my name, like white horses on the waves, I think it feels the same, as an ocean in my veins.

She faced criticism for both of these roles though. At least The Countess was a 500-year-old vampire who kills people, and Ally began as an demotivated musician who goes on to become a generic pop star that seemed un-Gaga... so there's somewhat of a distinction between her and the characters. But Gaga playing an extravagant, avant-garde pop star who has PTSD is... :air:

I sure did.

Someone wanted her to be in this film instead of A Star Is Born. You asked, why would she want to play a version of herself on film?

Critics have noted that her performances in Horror Story and A Star Is Born are heightened or skewed versions of herself. So, to answer the question "why would she want to play herself on film," because it has worked out pretty well for her so far, and she has been doing it for years...

It will actually. Oscars work differently, a movie is eligible if it’s released between January 1 and December 31, but they should submit it before sometime in November. Still, Portman is submitted as supporting so Gaga remains unbothered :classy:

Thank god

Actually most critics love it when actors look completely different from their usual personas.

Natalie Portman has always played very feminine, docile roles, and for her to go wild and play a pop star that resembles so much like Gaga was the key factor that impressed critics.

Same goes for Gaga, she's the woman who wore a meat dress, who made Poker Face and Bad Romance, has always been avant-garde, plays stadiums and arenas all over the world at ease, people wanted to see her stripped away off all the makeup, extravagant outfits, her fearless persona and critics loved that she was just playing someone absolutely ordinary who was vulnerable and fell in love. That is the thing that most critics praised Gaga for in A Star Is Born.

Critics will celebrate a good performance and deride a bad one. Whether the actor is portraying a character close to their own public persona or they are portraying a character that is wildly different than their public persona, it's all about the quality of the performance.
