dit 46,453
The thing with ppl criticizing Ally's passive nature when it comes to decision making is that that is real life. Bradley was not trying to make some "and this was the lesson" type of film..Bradley simply wanted to capture real life and thats what he did. Sadly in real life tons of women still take on a more passive approach to life in general because they have been systematically raised to be that way. Its wrong of course but Bradley never said it was right. He just showed us what many woman would act like in a situation like Ally's. Why do critics like this one always expect some big lesson in a film. Sometimes cinema just focuses on showcasing real life experiences...even ones you may not agree with. Celina 118
I actually was curious about what the author had to say, but I stopped reading at "she's essentially a sexy singing lamp" There are so many stories out there that portray women just like that. So many examples to draw from - enough to fill a textbook, but ASIB isn't one of them... I can't speak for the older ones, but how do you come away from this film thinking it presents no depth (or agency!) in Ally's character and try to claim her as another example of the sexy lamp trope? That's not to say that Jack & Ally's relationship was healthy or unproblematic, because it certainly wasn't... But that... was kind of the point
Serial Chiller 8,044
At the end of the day, as I've stated in the other thread about Gaga playing Ursula, no one really gives a damn about these people and their opinions. The more they try to invalidate everything that is enjoyable, the sadder their cause becomes. And artists/ film makers need not warp their vision to suit these psychotic demands. The movie has a clear message and vision, it cannot be everything nor should it try to be. I don't want 20 thousand political megaphones blasting at me at once. All they do is drown and cancel out each other.
Chickens in Malibu 7,873
Some media reporters have to find a way to attack Gaga, no matter how far fetched the narrative sounds.
Miel 15,009
It's crazy, because this movie is actually very socially aware and very up to the times. This just wasn't an issue the film was tackling. It's tackled substance abuse, the fragility of the music industry, and even misogyny (mostly through Ally's experiences with executives in the past)- but sexual assault and rape culture just isn't at the core, fabric, or even subtext, of the story. I mean, it still very much so smartly tackles toxic masculinity, masculine "authenticity", and all of its effects. But in the end, there is no horrifying power dynamic (sexual or otherwise) between the two main characters- it is made especially explicit with how Ally handles intimacy with Jackson. 3 points in and ready for more

danilov 288
as much as i wanted to understand what this article says and what it is trying to point out... imagine all famous and influential people not being "persuaded" by people around them. at some point in their lives, they decided to say "NO" and this people around them urged them to say "YES" and vice versa. i hated that the article listed things when Ally said NO and eventually gave in. I mean come on! your parent is urging you to join a famous singer, this famous singer is persuading you to sing your song on stage... and yet it tried to connect it to rape culture. i mean legendary people, famous leaders, all of them, at some point in their lives were persuaded to do something because perhaps they don't believe in themselves, or that they don't realize their capability. this is totally different with people persuading other people for their own advantage, to gain power over the other. that's rape culture. i mean it happens even in classroom settings where teachers are pushing kids to do something, because they have to know these things. Ally's NOs turning into YESes is totally different. i am mad.........
strangerthings 108
why are you threading this article and giving it clicks and attention? i swear, monsters are not the sharpest tools in the shed.
MJHolland 12,725
Girl I wouldn't take it too seriously. This is either a film critic snob who compulsively sh*ts on films that everybody likes because they feed solely off of transgression for transgression's sake -- they are, in fact, dependently contrarian -- or it is some broke creative writing major with tens of thousands in student debt that was hired to write a hit piece for clicks. Or, both.
Luxe Ford 3,481
It's a bloody film (not a movie...). It's fiction. Fiction doesn't have to be politically correct. In a way it shouldn't be, because then you can react to it, think about it and hopefully make a real difference. You don't have to write an article about it because you feel falsely upset about it. Shipper 13,077
I thi k they just want to write something negative about a movie everybody loves just for the NEGATIVE attention and the clicks so they can be edgy and different.
