OMonster 14,835
Absolutely loved the film but there are definitely a few things that I think it would've benefitted from. Firstly, the narrative should've explored Ally in more depth. How did she find being plunged into the spotlight so suddenly? Could she cope with fame? Was she intimidated by it? And how did it change her relationship with Jackson? In the same vein, it would've been nice to have had some scenes where Ally struggled with Jackson's addictions. A conversation with her best friend would've been nice - nothing profound, just recognised... you know? The biggest addition I think the film needed is a stronger wedding scene. This is the moment these two characters become one - it is a defining moment in their story. We absolutely should've seen the wedding, and they should've kept Ally singing 'Is That Alright?', too. I can't believe they cut that scene... it was so needed. It would've made Jackson's death more powerful had Ally just sang a song about wanting to die with him. Finally - whilst I guess it's a polarising choice - I think they should've shown Ally finding Jackson's body. Whilst I appreciated the intricacy and subtly of Ally's grief, I think it would've hit harder had we seen her immediate response. That could've been the biggest and most emotional scene in the film... but it never happened. Great shame. Aside from that, this is an incredible piece of film. I would give it a 9/10 - just falls short from perfection for me. subtext / fantasy

Like...why was she so seemingly okay with being transformed into something she wasn’t? She started out tough at nails but then changed into someone who was fairly submissive/indifferent to her career choices. I wish I understood her motivations more ( was she seeking fame/wealth or artistic fulfillment?) I feel like that was the point of her character arc though. In the beginning, she's someone who's fighting (both literally and figuratively) for what she wants: she confronts her boss, she punches that guy who was intruding on Jack, etc. Consequently, those are aspects that Jack loves about her. However, as time goes on, and as she becomes more famous she loses all of what made her such an interesting and motivating character and just becomes a puppet for her manager. Sure, at times she doesn't seem like she's being controlled or manipulated (i.e. when Rez tells her she was nominated for three grammies), but you can still see that she was, in fact, being controlled. This, combined with Jack's alcoholism were reasons for their relationship being so turbulent. 𝔗𝔥𝔢 𝔪𝔲𝔰𝔦𝔠'𝔰 𝔤𝔬𝔫𝔫𝔞 𝔟𝔯𝔦𝔫𝔤 𝔪𝔢 𝔟𝔞𝔠𝔨 𝔣𝔯𝔬𝔪 𝔡𝔢𝔞𝔱𝔥
Clip 5,100
To sum up the thread I think we can all agree that Ally's character would've needed some more depth or personality. Thank god she sent Jackson to rehab at some point because I was starting to feel underwhelmed that he was abusing susbtances every few minutes and she seemed to be pretty indiferent. Like at the start of the film she's like "uhh no I don't want to go with him he's drunk" and when they're married she seems weirdly okay. I also read someone asking what was Ally's relationship with alcohol and asking why she drinks before performing at some point (I don't remember which member said that). I thought that was pretty irrelevant in the movie tbh. The only reason why she drinks is to loosen up a little and be more outgoing, but that's it. Ashley 9,801
I would've liked more insight into Ally's past, like what happened to her mother, etc. I don't agree with everyone wishing we saw her finding Jack's body though.. That would have been way too traumatic, I would feel even more horrible for her. Besides she sends someone to check on him while she's still performing, so likely they found him then called the police. And I don't think Ally's rise to fame was rushed because we don't know how much time has passed, was it a few months, a year and a half? Some kind of timestamp like a Christmas/New Year's scene would have been nice.

I felt that Dave Chappelle's character was random AF... like who was this guy? It felt so out of place. I was thinking the same thing about the ear thing - it kind of felt like some random addition. I honestly thought his tragedy was going to be that he would lose his hearing and never be able to hear Ally sing again I thought the end was a bit rushed like a sprint to the finale. I wish they showed them happily reunited for a bit longer, but I guess the point is that he was triggered so quickly upon his return home, And lastly, I wish they showed Ally's reaction to getting the news about Jackson or someone finding him. Would have been amazing story if he lost his hearing, than to kill him off tbh. That would have been a good twist for the ASIB remake story and to make it different. Really wanted Jack to overcome his addiction, especially with all the celebrity overdoses and sucides lately. Exactly, a reaction of her finding out is what we needed to really get the emotions triggered.

I think it was to showcase that Jackson “tradition” of drinking before/after going onstage made her believe it was completely ok and normal, so most of the time when he was drunk she would be indifferent to it. Sometimes people around alcoholics don’t look too much on their addiction because they think “that’s who they are” (I remember she recalling he was drunk when they met, stating as a major reason why he fell in love with her). Akiki 3,900
I didnt feel Ally rise to Fame rushed. The video went viral, yes! But she got the gig with Interscope sometime later after She debuted ARUTW. Its clear that She toured with jackson from sometime.

Quartz 12,620
I barely understood anything when Jack and Sam were talking to each other. Can they mumble less? Jesus when Jack started punching Sam, I had no idea why because all I heard was 'ngulmdulmbrugnglgurm'. Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊
Ada 1,665
More development for Ally, definitely. While I loved Gaga in this and I loved the character, I couldn't help but feel much more connected to Jackson. At the end I really felt like this movie was all about him, and Ally just enhanced the power his storyline had. His scenes were the ones that made me cry, seeing him so vulnerable and almost like he had someone in there trying to reach out to the surface. Also the difference between the moments he was drunk and when he was sober was STUNNING. I can't believe how incredible Bradley is. I would've also taken out some unnecessary stuff, and add something more to slow the pace omg. It felt so rushed! For example, I would've made Ally go right away with Jackson to that first show. I think that would be more powerful for her character, showing that she had really given up and at the moment she found someone she could trust and that supported her (because they really wanted us to feel that) she just went with it; like she was after all waiting for it to come. Nobody ever loses hope or they won't be here (like Jackson at the end). Also it would've helped with that scene where they take her home. She looked like she was really fed up with him. I know that we are supposed to see Jackson having codependency issues but I think if she'd gone with him then it would've given him a REAL feeling that this was indeed a magical bond and that would've been more reasonable. I read that the pacing was on purpose, to show how fame affects life and stuff. I really think if that's the case they should've added more contrast to the two parts, because for me the whole thing seemed rushed. And the story's biggest weakness was that, be it a statement or not OH and the tinnitus omg, they missed so badly on that! Jackson's hearing really started to get bad and it's like no one cared. I think losing his ability to say something (so important to him) as well as his ability to be a good partner to Ally would've made for a much stronger case and a powerful reason for him to commit suicide. The stupid manager abusing him in his weak state still felt like not enough for me PS: Before anyone comes at me, I have to say I ****ing loved the movie. I just love talking about movies too and I really needed to talk to someone after that experience in the theater
