Diction in ASIB

My mother tongue is French.

When I watch anglophone movies and series and movies at home, I watch them in English with English subtitles.

However, at the movie theatre, since there are no subtitles, I usually go for the dubbed version to be sure I don't spend 12$ to understand nothing.

Except when I know too much the actor/actress's voice.

Which is the case for no one except Lady Gaga.

So I saw ASIB in English without subtitles at the movie theatre.

And I must admit I had a hard time understanding what Jackson and Sam Elliot and Dave Chappelle were saying most of the time.

I understood everything Ally, her co-worker friend, her dad, her manager and the drag queens were saying though.

I think I lost a lot of important informations because of me not understanding everything. For real, when Jackson was talking to Sam Elliot and/or Dave Chappelle, all I understood was "mgtehiwurkfgywieuhfjhrwkfgiu3kwgfuiy34qwufyg43kyfgq34yk".

And also for real, I had to look y'all's posts to understand who the f*ck was Sam Elliot (still don't know his character's name) in Jackson's life. And I still don't know why Dave Chappelle (don't know his character's name either) was in that movie. Who is he in Jackson's life? No clue.

However, when I watch Bradley's interviews, I understand everything he says. But in ASIB, it's a whole bunch of "bhjkwrfjdsbghirwkfjnjq" to me. When he talks with Gaga, I can kinda understand thanks to what Gaga says but it's hard.

So I wanted to know: am I bad in English or is their diction real bad? For real though, they barely moved their mouth. But maybe I'm just bad. So what's the matter with that? Maybe I'm just not used to the southern accent they're taking. I don't know. Enlighten me plz

my first time watching, i got a seat that was too far back, i literally couldn't hear what jackson and bobby (sam elliot, who plays jackson's brother FYI) was saying the entire film :air: literally all i heard was mumbles, and especially because im not so used to an american accent being SO EXTREME. i had to rewatch  a second time and got seats closer to the speakers so i could decipher what those 2 were saying. but i guess its authentic to their characters, just 2 arizona boys

edit: the worst part was when bobby was telling something emotional to ally at the ending but i literally didn't know what he was saying so his lines had no impact

What's your mother tongue? If it's English it confirms the fact that they don't have good diction. If not well we're just bad in English :air:

Spoiler

and tbh it really is humming :rip:

I've only seen it once. Now that I have a general idea of all the sh!t that's going down, maybe I can watch it again and concentrate more on what they're saying so I can get more than "rterwefg34wiefdk3uhiwe bro rhwefjgu4weghfu3w you're ****ing ugly rewhfaeihu3wihfnvhjwerbkhjf trust me egwrhweifjiqu4w"

tea, there was a line that seemed to be quite significant but i literally couldnt understand because of how low and mumbled bobby's voice was.

Ok people so who is Bobby? Is it Sam Elliot? I'm really clueless.

Sam Elliot mumbled alot. Even I had trouble understanding him at times. There were times I had to guess what was being said by what was happening.

i couldn't understand them too XD

I had to go and watch the SUBTITLED version.

I don't think I can watch a subtitled version until it's released in DVD/Blu-ray, so I'm actually considering to go watch the dubbed version once... I don't know how I'll handle seeing Gaga's face with someone else's voice though :rip:

Americans are pretty lazy with their enunciation and slur a lot. Deep voiced dudebros do vocal fry and make themselves even less understandable than they naturally are (it's usually harder to hear low voices because our ears naturally hear higher ones louder).

Probably not your fault and the way Bradley and Elliot talked was why.

Slurs are not a problem; I understood every "f*ck" there was to hear. Every other word was complicated to understand for my francophone ears though.

You definitely should have gotten subtitles. Country accents are not  your everyday city enunciation. Ain't. Y'all. Ma'am.

Tbh I had no problems understanding both Bradley and Sam Elliot, I generally have no problems understanding country ass American accents. (My mother tongue in German)

On the contrary, I needed subtitles for Harry Potter because I have a lot of trouble understanding British accents.
