Lady Gaga: 'It's Important to me that that music doesn't sound like mine'

I think she refers  to Hair Body Face which is quite crap  because  it is mean to be that way... in the movie (spoiler) she starts as an unknown person who is very talented at singing and songwriting and then her debut song is very bubblegum  pop with terrible lyrics... it's like a  criticism of what the music industry did to Ally... all about the image and so on rather than Ally herself and her talent.

I don't think  she refers to other songs like Shallow, Before I Cry or Always Remember us this way which are more Joannesque in a certain  way... ( I mean, no EDM)

I mean The Cure was written in that exploratory phase while working to find the sound for Ally - It wasn't a song that would have fit the movie or any Gaga album but they still thought it was a cool song so released it as a surprise for Coachella. It's not really indicative of her work as a whole and I don't see it as a reflection of her trying to be "that girl".

The problem I have with that is: she didn't just surprise release it. It had a lyric video, she performed it on tour, on a major award show, I still hear it played on Belgian radio, she really tried to make that song happen (and it worked, a lot of non-fans know that song now) and gave us no reason to believe that it wasn't something she was proud of as a Gaga track.

Maybe she just means to say the soundtrack doesn't sound like her so people will be curious for her next album, while still banking on and making a name for this one :vegas:

The rest of your comment about how you heard it is well written, and I think you convinced me. I guess I'm just a little puzzled by how the film's storyline seems to be so almost deliberately close to Gaga's own biography, or rather, the way she presents it. Maybe I'm looking too hard for clues about that.

Good.

These pop songs are beyond basic but she still released The Cure as a Lady Gaga single and it sounds just as basic which is worrying.

I think that’s why it didn’t get a music video, people forget Gaga is in an industry that has changed with streaming becoming more popular. The Cure was that generic bop she needed to stay relevant.

Tbh I enjoy the shallow pop music!  I want something uplifting and irreverent in this f*cked up world.  Its fun and distracting.  "Pop music will never be low brow"

Let us never forget "love it when you call me legs in the morning buy me eggs" and "slap honey on that pancake we know how to make that money"

Honestly I don't get the point of people saying 'generic' music needs to be a bad thing... Sometimes generic bops can be very good and enjoyable..

Music doesn't need to be deep or serious everytime....

Preach :firega:

This applies to pop music in general too

What’s in a reverse-warholian expedition?

I'm sorry Gaga but it sounds like yours and I love it :lolly:

That pop music sounds nothing like her pop music. Her pop has way more substance. It was meant to sound generic and current - and it succeeded in that :) x

Tbh except for maybe Heal Me's bridge, the pop bops sound nothing like Gaga would include in her albums post The Fame. If you take a look at catalogue since TFM (except for Telephone?), Gaga's dance pop is complex, theatrical and over the top. Yeah, sure that WDYDT has moments of excess but it's nowhere near the point of what Gaga's known for: theatricality. Just listen to PI, Applause, Aura, John Wayne. They're very in-your-face ugly-pretty and intricate while ASIB bops are soft and sexy.

I'm not saying that's bad but it's obvious that they made WDYDT worse in purpose as it's important for the storyline. On the other way, the ballads are as visceral as they can get and some could easily belong on BTW, especially Before I Cry and Always Remember Us This Way.

tbh it sounds nothing like Gaga, those pop songs are straight up teen pop.

Gaga make POP, like real POP music with LYRICAL GENIUS

I agree with everything you said but

only lyrically “good” songs she has are A-YO, Grigio Girls, Aura and Gypsy

only lyrically “great” songs she has are Angel Down, Sinner’s Prayer and Yoü And I

only “lyrically genius” song she has is ARTPOP.

By saying she’s a lyrical genius you’re kind disrespecting the actual lyrically strong singers. Examples that come to mind are Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys), Lana Del Rey, Lorde, and even though I don’t listen to them probably a lot of male pop bands like TOP and FOB

The movie actually changed the way I perceived the songs, especialy Why do you do that.

(SPOILER)

They are presented like sell out music in the eyes of Jack, with the camera focusing on her boobs in the SNL performance and the silly lyrics. People were laughing at how ridiculous it was in the theater and I get why, it's the presentation. I still like them and Gaga said that Ally actually wants to sing those songs so it's all good but it's different. They almost sound absurd now.

Heal Me is a better version of The Cure.

Hair Body Face sounds like a The Fame reject.

WDYDT is kinda different but I can see "pre/FameGa" doing this stuff.

Before I Cry is a masterpiece and could be put on any Gaga's album.

That's what instantly stood out for me about Hair Body Face haha

(But I prefer The Cure)

In Ellen Words "Bullshit". I can see some songs that don't sound like her maybe she was talking about Heal Me.

But most of the rest is like her better than she ever soudned.
