I'm no expert, but... my impression is that leather is largely kind of a byproduct of the meat industry, so there's not much additional impact from leather production per se, and a single animal yields a lot of material. Whereas, fur animals are mostly killed just for their fur, and it takes several to make a single coat, since they're small. Beyond that, we hear of cruelty in fur production in ways that don't seem to apply to leather.
