Drin Lon 7,875
So we all know that rep isn't as good as 1989, but I think it's safe to say that that's not the only reason it didn't do as good as 1989. To start off, the lead of the era was an extremely lackluster song that got terrible callout scores on radio but was still pushed, and hasn't reached 1M pure sales yet. It also spent the same amount of weeks on the charts as Katy's CTTR, a song deemed a flop in the US. The song got no televised performances, which maybe was for the best since the song would be very awkward to perform live. The only positive thing that came off of it was the video, which wasn't even nominated for video of the year at the VMAs, and this shows that Taylor literally didn't give a **** about it since a star of her caliber could have easily gotten the award if she wanted by just attending, since the video actually slays. Then we have the 2nd single (...Ready For It?), a song that I actually love, but that also got one of messiest single roll outs in history. Released just a week after the lead to promote some random ****, it wasn't even published on her youtube account for more than a month. It was chosen as the 2nd single more than a month after its release, due to good reception. Yes, a 1month+ gap, by that time people had lost interest. Also during the gap she also released Gorgeous, which didn't get good enough reception to be chosen as a single. At this point people didn't know what to think. Out of the 3 songs released, 2 were questionable, one was nice but nothing special, and the 4th track which came out a week before the album (Call It What You Want) despite being a cute track that many fans fell in love with, it wasn't exactly an instant song that gets you hyped for the album. In the end, the album turned out to be pretty darn good, so the tracks released were kind of misleading. Here's the thing, to release 4 tracks before the album wasn't a bad idea, but the way they released them and the choices were a mess. They could have release I Did Something Bad and Look as the first singles, since she wanted to go for a bad girl persona and IDSB is a much better and powerful song to represent that, and a VMAs performance would have been nice too. Then the other 2 tracks could have been ...Ready For It? and End Game, 1 or 2 weeks before the album's release, to test the waters as to which the GP would respond better to, and eventually be picked as the 2nd single, anyway. Let's move on to the 3rd official single, End Game, makes sense right? Well yeah, but it didn't go as planned. The song just didn't do good on radio and people weren't crazy about it either, it's def a grower imo, also the beyond basic video and 0 promo for it didn't help. I mean Ed's verse was arguably the best but his scenes in the video were a joke. I could have seen it do better if it was released after Look cause of the hype, but after the messy roll out of ...Ready For It?, End Game just wasn't the tea. Also, her team only focused on selling the album that first week to get similar stats to 1989, but that was kinda dumb. Then we have Delicate one of, if not the most radio friendly song on the album, that again, got a **** video. It did amazing on radio tho but not so good on streaming and sales, and again, promo would have helped since it missed the top10 by like, 2 spots I think, which sucks. Also let me mention again the snub at the VMAs, clearly because she didn't attend. Today Taylor announced the next single, Getaway Car, an amazing choice but looking at the way she's handled the singles this era I'm not sure that it'll even do as good as Delicate. By the looks of it she probably will flop at the Grammys too this year since she hasn't kept the album relevant enough. At least the tour is doing great I guess, good for her bank account. I'm just mad cause it's all of those little things that she didn't do which made this era loose the potential it had because reputation is a REALLY GOOD pop album that could have dominared more and helped her chances of getting artist of the decade, but by the looks of it she ain't getting it (karma is not a liar I guess ). I know this is a lot of emotions for an album so don't @ me /rant

RickMonster98 7,454
LWYMD was not bad as a the lead single, but they should have pushed it more in september and don't release ready for it THAT soon. Also "End Game" is one of the worst songs in the album, yeah it grows on you a bit, but it's still flat af. She should have released RFI in november, right before the album, and then release in february "Gorgeus" as the third single. However "Delicated" saved the era a bit, i love that video. "Getaway Car" is hands down the best song in the whole album, she can make it a hit. It has potential, with a great video and radio support. But I also believe that people in general didn't like the album as much as the other, so I wouldn't blame it on the promotion or on the singles choices. LIKELADYAGAGA 4,080
We don’t really know why the single choices were made. Maybe Taylor Swift who’s one of the best selling artists of our generation might know more about marketing than you? Maybe she wants to lay low and let the album speak for itself without over promoting it and making it seem like she is throwing herself at the public? Maybe she didn’t care about video of the year because she doesn’t want to attend a show that is going downhill?

Whispering 18,865
My guess is that Taylor and her team are making conscious choices for the long term. She's at a stage in her career where the strategy for album cycles will be different from previous cycles. Established artists are rolling out their eras differently than they were a few years ago. The music industry is drastically changing and promotion is changing with it.
