That's A Star Is Born in a lot of markets... It is about wanting, or not wanting, to watch subtitled films though regardless of what you say. Not everybody is literate, good at reading, or even has good enough sight (or any sight) that allows them to simply read subtitles rather than listen to a dub. Dubbing the movie makes it accessible to more people We can see how important that is when it comes to the popularity of non-english speaking movies in english speaking markets... They don't do well. Obviously they want this movie to be a success in non-english speaking markets and dubbing the movie is a way to cater to that audience. You can't equate non-English speaking movies with Hollywood films. Hollywood films are mainstream films that are watched globally, many people are still gonna watch The Avengers or Batman or Star Wars or Jurassic Park even if they weren't dubbed. You mentioned how these Hollywood films are not going to do well in those markets if they weren't dubbed, and made a comparison on how non-English speaking films are performing badly because they are 'subtitled'. The thing is both categories of films have very different natures.

Yes, Hollywood films are big and mainstream films - they have giant budgets and they have the marketing budget to push these films worldwide... Those films are still dubbed into different languages tho... That's generally part of the marketing strategy. They have the budget to translate, hire voice actors and dub the movies into different languages to make it more accessible to foreign markets. This isn't something unique to ASIB... I don't know why you seem to be acting like it is My comparison of domestic films compared to many non-English films is a valid point and doesn't just relate to the giant, Hollywood films... As an Aussie film student - I can convince my mates to go see Aussie made films, English made films, Indie American films, New Zealand films, Canadian films with me - I like non-english speaking films too, but they generally aren't as interested in subtitled foreign films They don't feel like spending a couple hours sitting back reading a screen. It just seems a little silly for so many people to be like "Omg why are the movies dubbed??? Can't they read subtitles??" when I'm very sure most native English speakers here aren't running to catch the latest non-english, subtitled foreign film release.
