It never fails to amaze me how much the public has glossed over that album a mere 4.5 years later, even though it was all anyone could talk about at the time. Lemonade had a bigger impact, despite it selling less, which is super weird. Outwith the "singles," the rest of the setlist of Beyonce has so little views. I really don't think its been remembered well outside Drunk In Love. 7/11 has her third highest views of all time despite the fact that it was off the barely publicised re-release and barely anyone knows that song other than superfans, which makes me think fake views are at play. Lemonade has a bit more impact but not by that much. The problem with the self-titled is that it's so freaking long and *feels* long. Lemonade isn't long, doesn't really feel long and is fairly easily digestible, plus the different way of making a video worked a lot better during Lemonade. BEYONCÉ was the testing for a surprise drop and video release, Lemonade perfected it imo. However, I do think both are great albums, just the self-titled can feel a little bloated. jaXXXon 1,537
BEYONCE spent over 183 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart. ONEHUNDRED AND EIGHTY f_cking weeks people!!! Born This Way spent 55 weeks. So I guess the answer is obvious, sadly.

Whaaaaat? The IFPI changed the international release day for music to Fridays saying it was because of Beyoncé's surprise release. You don't f_cking get bigger than that!! And how many surprise releases have there been done since? Too many to mention, they've been done to death. I love Gaga but how can BTW compete with that?! I'm assuming they meant cultural impact. 3 points in and ready for more
TheodoreRx 1,540
BEYONCE for sure. Born This Way spawned four top ten hits which were somewhat spread out, and Drunk in Love fizzled out quite quick. They both had impact, but BEYONCE is (imo) kind of forgotten after Lemonade. I feel like the surprise drop gimmick is the thing people remember.

I don't think it feels long, really, just a little unmemorable in places. But yes, Lemonade just feels a bit shorter, more digestible, by comparison. I feel like the Lemonade videos were much better and memorable as well and yes, the release was also a bit more...professional somehow and we did know about it a little before this time. 20 hours ago, jaXXXon said: Whaaaaat? I wasn't talking about the surprise release idea at all, just the actual content of the album. I don't think its been remembered very well apart from Drunk In Love. Like you've just said, the ultimate thing people remember from that era is how it kickstarted the surprise release trend but not a great deal else. Here's all the videos, including interludes and their views and likes, from most popular to least popular, according to YouTube: Spoiler Drunk In Love - 479 million views, 1.8 million likes Pretty Hurts - 214 million views, 1.5 million likes Partition - 175 million views, 899k likes XO - 139 million views, 676k likes Yonce - 139 million views, 696k likes (interlude) Flawless - 75 million views, 391k likes Haunted - 54 million views, 326k likes Jealous - 36 million views, 242k likes Mine - 36 million views, 268k likes Blue - 26 million views, 155k likes Blue - 20 million views, 206k likes Heaven - 19 million views, 160k likes Superpower - 18 million views, 111k likes No Angel - 16 million views, 98k likes Rocket - 13 million views, 120k likes Ghost - 10 million views, 93k likes (interlude) Not bad, considering that the whole album wasn't uploaded officially to her channel until 11 months after the release but if it was such a successful album and everyone loved it, why did only the "singles" get the most views and everything else got kicked aside? There are music videos from artists that got no promo whatsoever and they've got higher likes and views than the stuff in the lower echelon. Even Gaga's 14 minute MTN video is approaching 80 million views and some of her smaller work that got no promo like Beautiful Dirty Rich, Eh Eh, GUY, John Wayne and Joanne, has got more views and likes than most of of some of these tracks. Then you look at Lemonade's views and likes and realise how much higher they all are. I just find it so odd that the public can be so obsessed by an album but drop it just as quickly and seem to forget all about it. I'm just saying that it didn't exactly have the "people will know the entire album" trait that Beyonce hoped for it. But as regards the surprise release element? Yeah, she unquestionably started that.
