Nancy Isenberg's best seller White Trash - The 400 year untold history of class in America, is at the top of the reading list at the academy's Institute of American Studies. "They think Chinese stole their jobs and companies moved from the US to other countries," said Zhao Mei, the managing editor of the Chinese Journal of American Studies, summarising the main thesis of White Trash. In Ohio, "white people" haven't worked for several generations and don't leave Ohio, she told reporters at a briefing on the trade war in Beijing on Monday. "Trump represents that political class, and I don't know how China should respond," she said. Isenberg has been in constant demand with US media since 2016 to explain the phenomena that put Trump in the White House. Not really, especially in this context. This isn't saying "White people in Ohio are lazy and don't want to work". They are saying "White people in Ohio have faced unemployment due to economic displacement and they tend to believe China has "stolen" U.S jobs"... This is a discussion on "White America" who voted Trump in, how their attitudes led to the rise of Trump. I don't know how you discuss the rise of Trump without talking about the demographics of those who voted for him, the attitudes of those who voted for him and the conditions that led to those attitudes being popular. The economic conditions of black people in Washington and their attitudes are not really relevant in the discussion of Trump's rise. Discussions of the economic conditions of White America and the attitudes of White America are If there was a reason to discuss the economic conditions of black people in Washington and their attitudes - I don't see how that would face a ****-storm. Second, they're trying to understand the politics of the U.S. which a year and a half ago were turned upside down by one demographic of people. That *is* something worth studying. What led to their backing of Trump? Why with such fervor? What inspired them to come out and vote when they hadn't in decades? What has shaped their political views? Are you from the U.S.? It's a common, if deeply offensive term so it's more like the author is using it as a way of speaking to American audiences. It isn't being used in ignorance, but rather in recognition of the mean-spirited and classist ties to the word (which I think is a more appropriate adjective to describe the word than racist just because of how the word is used and applied; the fact that they're white is more of a distinguishing of them from poor black or hispanic or asian folk rather than being the source of the insult-- that source would be their socio-economic status).
