MEM 3,114
Long post ahead, sorry not sorry. Pop music is just not what it used to be...I mean of course, at 24, I'm being subjective, but the early 2000s really were the VMAs at its peak. Songs were actually bops and less serious/politically driven as they are now. Gaga, Katy, Beyonce, Britney, Christina, Pink, Kelly Clarkson, even Avril Lavigne (she was the first artist I ever stanned lol) had good, happy 4-chord pop ballads and just-angsty-enough teenage bops that weren't obvious digs at people; they were just meant to be for fun?! It's funny looking back now, because I remember being shocked at certain things that just seem so innocent now, even down to the fashion. Okay there were some statement-making looks and lots of mid-driffs, but nothing compared to now. Makeup wasn't even a big deal. Appearance was really more about creative expression rather than 'looking pretty' or 'sexy'. I mean look how iconic: And they sang Lady Marmalade, which is all about getting laid, but look at those comfortable pants. (PS I know Gaga rarely covers up, but as we know she presents herself with purpose far beyond and pretty much never with the intent of 'looking hot'.) It's crazy to me how quickly they mature now, obviously due to more resources/technology, but most pop singers seem to blend together or have the same kind of sound/look. I'm not calling anyone out in particular, I've just been watching a bunch of music videos from ex-child stars and youtubers suddenly turned singers and literally cannot tell them apart. Manufacturing is just obvious to me now? And the part that gets me is the age? Like they're all 13-17 looking like 30 year olds. Gaga burst onto the scene at 22-23, which is now considered 'late' in the game. But I think that's what makes her so amazing, because she actually lived a full life before getting too famous (she left college early but still she got to experience it). Also she really started from the bottom up, doing so many unpaid gigs and writing millions of songs, rather than having things handed to her (I'm just generalizing here, don't take offense). She's just so full of integrity and creativity and honestly I don't think I'll ever stan anyone as much as I do her. She's incomparable and that's the tea

There isn't anyone on Earth delusional enough to think that she actually had the best video of last year. I mean... I never watched the video once because that song didn't stuck with me. I've always wondered why is that song so popular. It baffles me.
PSYCHOSHTICK 2,820
Well, Madonna got her accent back and JLo performed, so I guess there was kind of a nod to 2001 this VMA’s I suppose.

NCgaga 4,321
Man.. I’m looking at the red carpet photos and there is not one A-lister. Just Internet/reality personalities. A few actors of musicians here and there. MTV let go of Music in the early 2000’s and they have nothing but themselves to blame for this garbage. If I was An A-list musician, I wouldn’t be caught dead there. Embarrassing.
Judas Society 3,584
1 hour ago, Mister Gaga said: that's exactly how she acted with the LGBT community, back in the 80' when you could be murdered for supporting LGBT people. AIDS epidemic was at it's peak, homophobia too, but there she was. With us. Madonna was one of the first people to be associated with the LGBTQ+ community. She may not filter her mouth and her attitude towards other female singers may be cringe-worthy, but people can't discredit her with this.

She makes tributes all about her. None of this matters... why? Because she is the number one selling female artist that has ever existed. She is at the top of the list. No one touches her. She has remained culturally relevant for 40 years. I have my issues with her, but there is no such thing as discrediting her.

GlitterAndGrease 594
The VMA used to be the best award show. I remember as a kid I considered them something sooo special. Almost every year there was at least one iconic performance/moment. They used to be about the spectacle, about the music, about the performances. Even before I was born the VMA were amazing. Nowadays the VMA are all about feuds and drama. I only watched J.Lo's performance and even though she was indeed great it wasn't a classic VMA moment. This decade I only enjoyed 2-3 performances and those ones were overhsadowed by a gimmick MTV planned. I mean You & I was awesome but everybody remembers beyonce's baby bump. Applause was great but everyone remembers Miley's gross performance. Britney was great and they put her after beyonce's mini concert. Even Rihanna who performed 4 times was overshadowed by beyonce. The VMA lost their magic. Nowadays the only great award show for me are the Billboard music awards.
