Smother Em Eh

I always hear people say things like well I don’t like so n so’s album cuz of all the filler

And others things like.......

“TF would’ve been better if it didn’t have those “filler” songs on it.” And I always wonder everytime I see something like that, and wonder “what is filler exactly”?

(When talking about pop music)

So WTF is filler? Can someone please explain it to me.

A filler is a song that sounds cheap and unfinished that just got put on an album to fill some space between the singles and it's clearly audible that the song wasnt given much attention

Imo it's a song which is clearly not as good as the others and that was put in the album by default to fill the tracklist

Am I A Girl

I’m not 100% sure mysel...

think it’s a song that doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the theme of the album or just doesn’t work well with the other songs!!

basically it’s a song put on an album to make the tracklist / album longer (I think)

A filler to me is like if they need 14 songs for an album and they only have 13, they just make a random song that doesn't have to do with anything that an album means like Jewels N Drugs on ARTPOP.

I mean it's supposed to be songs that are placed on a album that don't add to the narrative or don't match it's overarching concept. I'd say that Formation is filler on Lemonade. People just call songs they don't like fillers.

I've heard fillers that are better than Jewels N Drugs.

No :vegas:

I enjoy the album completely. If there’s a song I dislike that’s Firework. :huntyga:

It really depends on how the process of making the album imo. If the artist has 3 or 4 really good songs ready to go, they need to rush to fill up the remaining 7-10 tracks in order to release a full LP and capital on those 3-4 songs that can be hit singles.

And example of this would be Madonna’s Music (which i think is an absolutely brilliant album). But songs Music, Impressive Instant, and Don’t Tell Me where written before the rest of the album. In fact Music (the song) was released before the album was even completed. So M+Mirwais hustled to fill up the 8 remaining tracks to release the album in time to capitalize on Musics (the song) colossal success.

Just compare Music which was produced in that way with the superior albums American Life, Confessions, or ROL—which were completed with a cohesive sound and theme and then the singles were picked.
