Dua Lipa is overrated

I am happy for those who like her, and have no qualms about her enjoyed successes, but personally I find her music underwhelming.

Does she make bops? Yes... but that's it. I just feel like I'm not in a stage in my life anymore where I value bops over other kinds of music... and the bops she does have are not like, game changingly good to me. Like, that's whats so great about artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, Charli XCX, etc... They are surely making bubblegum pop music, but in a subversive way that reclaims the potential for amazingness and "profoundness" in those genres. Its an honest, unashamed love for that genre of music and its potential that is really refreshing. As Gaga once said, "Pop Music Will Never Be Low Brow" and I believe in it full-heartedly, so don't mistake my dislike of Dua's songs as a critique of "generic" music or pop music itself :emma:

I had a kid (I say kid he was like 20) tell me Dua Lipa was his favorite artist of all time this year because her music was SO good and her voice was so great and I had to stop myself from laughing in his face :rip: Like, I'm a rational adult. People can like whatever they want w.o deserving judgment or ridicule, but my first reaction in that moment was to hope he just didn't listen to anything other than pop radio... or something. She doesn't even have that that much music out :air:(He later told me he thought all rap was angry black people speaking over trashy beats so my initial impression of him as a shallow person was somewhat verified :ladyhaha: ) I just can't buy into the hype without some kind of substantive reason.

I wouldn't even say she's overrated because it's not like people are saying she's this amazing and charismatic performer ala Madonna/Gaga. When she sells out stadiums with no improvement in her performing energy then let's have this discussion again. Remember even Ariana and Camila and Rihanna began with not-so-stellar performances in their early days.

I actually really enjoy her music and her voice. Her voice reminds me of Amy Winehouse, albeit less raw and jazzy. Do I think she's the next coming of Christ? No .... but let's her give her a chance.

Sorry I saw her live a week ago and I can tell you she CAN perform, i liked her dancing plus the way she interacted with the crowd was really nice. She seemed to love what she does

And when will GGD stop calling everyone who is currently successful overrated?

Yall acting like they have to reinvent the wheel. Be glad there is a successful female out there in a business that's currently dominated by rap and men. This was her first album, so obviously they had to dumb it down a little bit so they can sell her. People who have been to her show say she is much more alive in smaller venues. I think her voice is decent, it's not all about high notes and whistles.

And all those girlies that you named aren't any better :huntyga:

they didn’t dumb it down

from what we see in her.. she has no ‘x factor’ about her, she has close to no artistry, she’s just a pop fad

I really don't know where this Dua hate came from and why it's becoming bigger and bigger so fast, but it's unpleasant to witness. She didn't even got the chance to prove herself and yet some of you are hating on her like she killed your best friend. Why is that? And of course you can have a opinion and dislike her, if you just worded that nicely and let her be her I'm not talking about you guys.

Anyhow... She's not your thing? Fine, let her be her and walk away, no need to hate her.
She only makes pop music and that's a bad thing? I didn't know making pop music isn't allowed anymore, but oke, go listen to something edgy because that's all that you seem to like these days, do your thing.
Her vocals are weak? Well, I've seen her live twice and her vocals aren't bad at all. She is just yet becoming a bigger star, can the girl grow and become more confident? It seems not.
Her vocals are also really unique, so people might not like her voice color, but that doesn't mean she is a bad singer.
Yes, she is awkward on stage at times, but she is already improving. You have to understand that's she is just starting.

Comparing Dua to Gaga and Beyoncé isn't fair tbh. Like they are the biggest and best artists of our time. And why would you compare a singer after one era to performers that are rocking this businesses for 10+ years now? Like, that's not even logic. Dua will never be Gaga or Beyonce and she probably doesn't want to be them, but that doesn't mean she can't have her place in this industry besides them, right? Why are we always acting like we don't have room for somebody else? Like they are stealing a seat from your fave? They aren't.

We have to be honest that the videos Dua delivered are really fun and interesting to watch to. Far from basic if you ask me, you've to give her that at least.
Also, if you hear her voice, you know it's Dua right away. That's also a nice thing about her.

But also, Dua is a sweetheart. She support all our faves, woman in general, the LGBTQ+ people. She is down to earth and a good roll model and doesn't deserve all this negativity around her.

She keeps slaying, she keeps the female industry interesting when others don't do it for me, so I keep stanning her and I don't mind what you all think. :vegas:

The bigger the star, the bigger the target I guess.

So you complain about GGD calling out successful women and then you did the same with the last sentence.

so confused :messga:

Why must we drag anyone who is currently successful?

She’s not going to be a threat to Gaga’s throne or anything :smh: We should be glad we have a young and upcoming ‘pop’ girl who is already having an influence on the charts, and that cannot be easy being surrounded by the likes of Drake and other hip/hop and RnB music that plagues the charts today.

In my messy era.

A swiftie calling out another artist for not having stage presence and not being a good singer? And not presenting anything groundbreaking?

Taylor seems to have great stage presence on her Reputation Tour. Sure Taylor may not be the greatest singer, but she is a far better writer than Dua. Love Story is yet to be beaten.

"Seems to have"

She's only decent in front of a piano

And yes, we all know it, Tay Tay's only talent is writing

As long as you're not one of the people who were praising in the comments on that topic about Dua Lipa, I'm fine:trollga:

OT: Maybe we have to wait what DL2 will do but "IDGAF" is overrated in my opinion. Her debut includes some underrated bops tho. I think sometimes it's "better" not to be extremely famous because the magic might disappear. That's what happens to Dua's music in my opinion. The music hasn't got worse, it felt different

I think the problem is newcomers who are doing well (unique or not) get praised like the next Madonna, but I think that isn't Dua's fault. It's the fault of this new generation. Honestly, pop industry after 2014 was extremely boring but of course you can't blame Dua for that. It's just the gp so actually I should have made a blame topic for the gp:huntyga:

People nowadays don't know the legacy of Madonna or Michael Jackson. They are like "ok this song is nice" and they stream it. Consistently, a lot of older artists "flop" because they can't keep up with the streaming era. It's not worrying but rather annoying how everything changed in a bad way for the music landscape (I already made a topic about it)

I actually only heard about her through going on here, so when everyone kept praising her I was like, hey, let me see what everyone is talking about, and.... I was not impressed. I just don't really vibe with her music and voice for some reason 🤔. I'm glad she has a career and some success, but she really does nothing for me and I don't really get the hype. Her Instagram is cute doe.

Right! Maybe we are too quick to judge considering her debut but we start comparing it with "The Fame" where Gaga exploded just like Dua but Gaga is way more artistic, even though that's not weird considering Gaga is also more artistic than most artists out here. I give Dua a chance

This Dua Lipa hate is so mediocre. Let the new pop girls breathe, bc it's obvious kids don't care about the main pop girls of 2010.
