JazzGa 14,538
Remembering the time TLC led the way in making a political statement with avant-garde fashion Legendary girl group TLC were known for accessorizing with condoms throughout the 90s. They pinned them to their overalls and jeans and wore them as earrings and eye patches. Their looks sent a clear message to always have one on you, even if yours is probably on the INSIDE of your wallet! “We wanted to empower young girls to have their own stash of condoms and not to leave it up to the guys,” Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins told Teen Vogue in 2017. “Some parents thought we were telling their kids to have sex. But we were making a fashion statement to make it easier to talk about sex." "During that time [the early 90's], so many people were getting diagnosed with HIV. People were talking about it, but not really talking about it. As role models, we knew we needed to start the conversation," continued Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. TLC were pioneers when it came to using fashion to send important messages to their fans. However, if you decide to rock the TLC look and start safety pinning condoms onto your clothes, I recommend you use a different condom that doesn't perhaps have a safety pin hole in it when it comes time to use it! Anderson123 36,375
Spice Girls even did it with this single: But for real, it must've been scary to live as a gay man in the 90's during this time. Fortunately things have changed so much and HIV is no longer an issue, as long as you take your meds, which is only one or two pills a day. Sadly there's this new culture about taking PrEP and not using condoms, like there's not a million other STIs out there:

Besides the fact that it only reduces one specific risk, not eliminating all of them, there are also the possible side effects which may not be discovered by those taking it until after they've been taking it for a while. I worry about there being undislosed side effects of PrEP which will negatively impact people's lives and not be discovered or taken seriously for decades, just like what happened/is happening with birth control.
