Gay couple publically whipped under Sharia in Indonesia

Banda Aceh - A gay couple was publicly whipped in Indonesia's conservative Aceh province on Friday, despite an earlier pledge by officials to stop the punishment after it drew international criticism.

The two men were flogged more than 80 times each for having gay sex, which is outlawed under local Islamic law, as a jeering crowd hurled abuse at them.

They were among 15 people whipped outside a mosque in the provincial capital Banda Aceh on Friday for crimes including drinking or selling alcohol and showing affection in public.

A crowd of about 1 000 people, including tourists from neighbouring Malaysia, snapped pictures and shouted "flog them harder" as a hooded figure rained down lashes from a rattan cane on their backs.

The unidentified men were the second gay couple whipped in public this year in Aceh, underscoring the increasing discrimination faced by Indonesia's small LGBT community.

Aceh is the only region in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, that imposes Islamic law.

Public flogging is a common punishment for a range of offences including gambling, drinking alcohol, and having gay sex or relations outside of marriage.

"Hopefully the flogging we're witnessing today will serve as a lesson for people not to violate sharia (Islamic law)," said Banda Aceh official Tarmizi Yahya.

It's devastating to read this. I've been to Saudi-Arabia once and I saw a public hanging of two gay boys when my taxi drove to my congress. It's hard to realize that we live in the same world as those barbaric people. I hope we eventually go back to the days of the old Greeks and Romans where gay sex was completely normal and accepted by everyone.

WHAT? Omg that's so sad... I find it difficult to comprehend why people are like this and why there is so much hate towards people who just want to love eachother. It's so sad, I'm sorry you had to witness that :omg:

but the internet will still get mad at people for criticising islam :/

Honestly every religion should be criticized. Islam is no exception even if liberals claim otherwise. Political Islam is the death sentence for so many people

Absolutely, every religion/ideology should be open for criticism and most are. Criticising christianity, judaism etc is fine for people but as soon as islam is brought into the mix its a point of contension for some reason, I don't get why

Muslims immigrating to other countries isn't really a risk at all, the issue is religious governments. No religion should have power over a country's judicial system.

disgusting :awkney: religion brings more division than unity...more hate than love... If god exists I'd imagine she/he'd be ashamed how primitive most people are in regards to respecting one another. It's sickening how people focus on fear, and in that regard focus on the sections of the holy books that bring division rather than the sections that say "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself"...

In the end holy books are written by men, and thus they are subject to alteration.

Isn't it? I'm not sayin all of them are like that, but most problems i had a as a gay person was always with moslems, in front of the club, at the street etc, and that was in Munich.

And look what is happening to Europe right now, all the countries are turning to far right, because there are so many of them here right now. Afd is soon gonna be the second largest party in Germany...
