Did Gaga replace Michael Jackson for a while?

I know the title sounds vague, so I will elaborate.

I was watching tons of videos about Michael Jackson and how he's supposedly still alive etc and it reminded me of what a massive public figure he was (and still is) and how the media would go absolutely crazy every single time he went out and did something. And I remember reading in a book about the Spice Girls how the media need that kind of personality to sell photos, papers and so on. When Princess Diana died in 1997, the media took their obsession with the Spice Girls to a whole new level, and particularly focused on Victoria Beckham once her engagement/marriage to David Beckham took place. They needed to replace Diana with someone and they thought Victoria was the perfect fit, and the media attention that Victoria Beckham received for years after that in the UK was absolutely insane.

So this got me wondering, once Michael died, did the media obsess over Gaga more than before because of the similarities between the two artists? Michael was a wonderful entertainer, he caused controversy, pulled stunts, he was mysterious, fragile, artistic, had a huge fanbase and a close relationship with his fans, and he often spoke of how the fame had affected him. This all sounds familiar as Gaga is a very similar kind of public figure and she was even supposed to open for him on his This Is It tour.

The media were already very interested in Gaga before Michael's death was announced in June 2009, but it did escalate very quickly once he died and reached dizzy heights later in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Do you think she somewhat replaced Michael in the media for a while after his death?

I personally think so, they needed an eccentric, controversial figure to obsess over and get people to talk about, and I think Gaga was the perfect character for them.

Sorry if it's too long, I just felt like sharing this thought with you all!

I wouldn’t say replace but gaga was the only superstar since Britney who received this kind of extensive media coverage internationally

Interesting theory! I think it's possible, although Michael Jackson wasn't very active publically in the years leading up to his death (whereas coverage for Diana was non stop until she died).

Yeah, what I'm wondering is if MJ's death impacted Gaga's media power in any way. It certainly increased after he died but then again maybe she was gonna reach the same heights just by herself with her outfits and music videos and performances. But Micheal dying left a huge gap in gossip media, and I think Gaga filled it.

That is very true, although he had only recently come back, and the media was ready to dissect and overanalyze absolutely every little detail about his tour, documentary, appearance etc. I think Gaga satisfied some of their thirst for "weird", "crazy", "controversial" headlines.

Absolutely not. Let's cut the bullsh*t honestly. Why do younger people think that all these newer artists are "replacing" legends like Michael,Janet,Madonna,Prince,David Bowie, etc.? Nobody will ever replace these legends, regardless of if they've passed or not. It's absolutely ridiculous to think that they will (i.e. _______ is the new King Of Pop). Gaga will always be the first Gaga, not the next Michael Jackson or the replacement of Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson is a name that will live on through many generations to come because of his hard work, talent, dedication to music and his fans, humanitarian efforts, etc. and currently sits as the highest earning dead celebrity. Although I don't want to think about if Gaga died,I really hope Gaga achieves success as high as Michael has,but I don't want her to be put up on Michael's pedestal because Michael is untouchable and the record/history books provide those receipts.

You completely missed the point, got your knickers in a twist and assumed I am younger than my age. Bravo!

1) This is not about Gaga being the new MJ. Have you even read the post?

2) Calm your tits.

3) I know I don't look my age but I am 33 and very much aware of everything MJ was and did.

I love that idea of "filling the gap" from a sudden loss. I personally think that is very true, and with someone that left as big of an imprint as MJ, it would only be natural to look for a replacement (whether temporary or not.)

I mean my dad even said he doesn't remember anyone dominating in such a strong peak

At her peak she was the biggest on:

- tours

- awards

- single hits

- album sales

- media buzz

- most whatched music videos (first artist to 1 billion views)

Since Gaga there hasn't been an artist that dominates every single category. Some might dominate in one aspect some in another but no one was the biggest on everything

When Katy Perry had the most hits she didn't have the most awards or album sales or tours (same with Rihanna)

When Adele had the most album sales or awards she didn't have the most consecutive hits or biggest tours (if she tried harder probably could have tbh but point is she didn't)

Taylor Swift has dominated many categories but not media buzz at the very top

But Gaga at one point was the biggest in every category so the peak was massive in 2009 to 2011

Not only she broke records in views with Blank Space, Bad Blood and LWYMMD, sold 1 MILLION PLUS units first week for the whole decade, she's right now on the (probably but not yet) highest grossing pop tour in history, she's been given a lot of awards recently, but also she was everywhere in the media, especially during BS, BB and LWYMMD:legend: and everytime she started/broke up with someone:green:

She's having the same success in 2014-18 Lady Gaga had in 2008-12
