Lord Temptation 11,209
Early 2000s: urban pop sound was huge (P!nk’s first album, Xtina’s Stripped, Britney x Neptunes, Ashanti, Craig David, Usher circa 8701, Beyonce’s first album, Timbaland x Nelly Furtado, Aaliyah), then you had emo, nu-metal and the indie rock revival (The Strokes, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand etc) Mid 2000s: uh...a bit of a black hole for me. Kanye’s debut, Mariah’s Emancipation, Madonna’s Confessions are some gems out of this period Late 2000s: Most of the artists from the early 2000s are no longer popular. Indie rock is approaching overload. Most are experimenting with electronic music (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Killers, Strokes, Cut Copy, Bloc Party) The Global Recession is hitting and people want escapist, dancey club music. The new sound is EDM in it’s earliest non-commercialised form, a fusion of electro house, nu-disco and especially synthpop. Major releases include Rihanna’s GGGB and her best album Rated R, Katy Perry’s debut and of course Gaga’s Fame and Fame Monster. I would even consider the period late 2008-mid 2012 the EDM era (Skrillex, Calvin Harris, Zedd, Avicii are all massive - plus all the main pop stars are doing house/electronic/dubstep/techno sounds) 2013 was a brand new era. ThisGuyTony 29,608
The 2000's still don't seem that long ago so people aren't feeling as nostalgic for that music as they are for the 80's/90's music.
Schizophonic 7,015
i was born in 87 and i totally remember most of music starting in 93-95. at that time and for all of the 90ies until the mid 00´s the radio stadtions played the top 100 charts in full every weekend as a countdown. there were several tv shows playing the musicvideo charts on sunday afternoon, top of the pops was still huge (also charts with live tv performances on saturday aftertnoon tv) and everyday mtv/vh1/viva/mtv2pop (europe) were music tv stations that played musicvideos and music documentarys 24/7. plus the famous TRL like shows we used to watch everyday right when we came home from school. its wasnt nessecary to watch these programms with full attention, it could also played along doing homework for school cleaning up your room cause it was most of the time only music. and all the artists came in to the studios everyday and i mean really huge stars even here in germany. so u had sometimes a usual wednsday afternoon with britney in studio for interviews and performances for 3 hours live on air. and you were able to write or call in. that was our source for music usually, plus weekly magazines on newsstands. round about the millenium mark the internet became available but it wasnt until 2002-03 before it really was a source for music because in the beginning it was most likely text only with very few very small pictures (like avatarsize on forums). the first time i bought music online was most likely 2006. Drin Lon 7,875
I feel like this decade needs a really strong couple of pop albums before it ends so it can really leave its mark, because Idc what anybody says I think pop music up until 2016 slayed this decade
