But wait. That means only trans people can play cis characters :’( Man, diversity in hollywood is allowed to go wayyyyyyy down. Oh well, still great for the lgbt community. Okay Think about what I wrote again. You clearly don’t get it.

Acting is something people love to do and it would be really difficult for people who love doing it to do it if role requirements are something they have no control over. Acting is acting. Acting would not exist if there was no pretending part. Then a man can play a woman ? A woman can play a man ? Scarlett Johansson can now play a black person on the next Black Panther because it's "just acting" ? Trans actors EXISTS they are not even allowed in casting rooms !! But omg "it would be really difficult for people (cisgender) who love doing it to do it if role requirements are something they have no control over" poor Scarlett can't have other roles than playing a trans character :(((((

If someone plays a role that has anything to do with their life, it’s a documentary. This is news to me. An awful lot of movies are documentaries that I thought were fiction. I would’ve hated to be the people in Snakes on a Plane. Can you imagine how scary that must’ve been?

Nowadays playing a trans person (by cis actors) is only done because it's Oscar bait. She ain't risking ****.

But we live in a world where girl can become man and man can become girl. I am female and i would have nothing against man playing woman if he represents me in a right way. I literally would not mind that. 3 minutes ago, uo111 said: Baby child I got it. If someone plays a role that has anything to do with their life, it’s a documentary. This is news to me. Never wrote things you wrote and let’s not be mean and represent my reply as something stupid or crazy. Acting is pretending and it’s a FACT. Mr S 8,672
Even if they had cast a trans for the role, most of the people complaining on twitter wouldn't have paid money to watch anyway. The movie would flop.

It's not stupid or crazy, it's ignorant. A disabled person playing a disabled person is not like a documentary. Just because both the actor and the character happen to be disabled does not mean their experiences are the same. You are literally saying every disabled person is the same as every other disabled person, and you don't even realize it. I don't want you to defend yourself. I just want you to reflect on what you said. I'm not attacking you, I'm letting you know why your line of thinking is hurtful. Examine what you said and think about how that would make an actual disabled actor feel.

Yeah, I don't remember her getting any grief over that role, in fact I remember her getting an Oscar. Have the goalposts moved so far already? Even more recently, I seem to remember Jeffrey Tambor getting nothing but praise for Transparent (until he got #MeToo'd, but that's a whole other thing). Or did I just miss the complaints? Didymus 34,379
This is not about any of the issues mentioned. This is solely about her being a female. As has been brought up, a male actor would never get so much backlash because their choices just aren't analyzed to look for something offensive. Also, at the end of the day the movie has to make money and famous faces are regularly used to promote movies. I can't remember all of this backlash when Eddie Redmayne starred in The Danish Girl either THANK YOU. Heck, people were praising him/the movie. Tbh, I think it's just that this exaggerated PC movement hadn't kicked in yet full-force in 2015. OT: While it would have been much better to cast a trans actor, I don't think this ought to be a huge deal. Raise awareness, constructively critique the casting*, and move the hell on. Go support indie LGBT directors/actors/film festivals (of which and whom there are PLENTY) if you actually gave a sh*t

Of course people can bring up the surrounding issues like @SKANK mentioned, but it doesn't always have to come in the form of criticism. The fact that this is tied to a specific (gorgeous) actress is just so typical, you can wonder if this is really about appropriateness and not just people wanting to hate on Scarlett in a socially acceptable way (aka under a cloak of concern)... In my experience it seems that some people will just actively seek out something to criticize because that effort is linked to smarts these days. But personally I haven't seen any of these people make an active effort offline to make sure that the issues they're so digitally attached to are represented or helped in reality If you care so much, don't just bring it up when a celebrity is involved. While I do agree that women are scrutinised to a larger degree, I'll be honest in saying I remember the backlash Eddie Redmayne faced for playing a Trans Woman... All you need to do is google "Eddie Redmayne trans" to find the articles (Although, a lot of the sites popping up for me are Australian sites since I'm in Australia):https://www.indiewire.com/2015/12/regressive-reductive-and-harmful-a-trans-womans-take-on-tom-hoopers-embarrassing-danish-girl-213499/ https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/sep/02/redmayne-rufflalo-hollywood-trans-movies-danish-girl-roles-movie http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-19/danish-girl-director-tom-hooper-calls-for-transgender-equality/7073640 I also remember the criticism of Jared Leto's role as a trans woman... I'm actually kinda surprised most people here don't...
