I have a feeling she's doing all of this on purpose to push people's buttons :chica:

I love her

Even though she’s known for being controversial would she really use her kids like that? As far as I can remember she’s always tried to keep them out of the spotlight.

What spotlight? This is taken from her Instagram stories :air: She's very open on her social media

Black domestic workers in white households isn't something that happened 300 years ago that we all need to forget about...this was going on in the 1950s/60s. That's our parents' lifetimes. It's not something that can easily be erased from cultural memory.

yeah but that is not what's happening in Madonna's picture so where is the issue?

My point was that she never generally drew attention to them, let alone use them for controversy and/or attention. Just doesn’t seem like something she would do imo. I think this is innocent.

But it's not drawing attention to them. She does this thing everyday, she posts a cute pic or a short cute video of her doing random ****. I love seeing her healthy and happy tbh, even though some people find it cringy (:triggered:). It's not the first time she's posted a picture with her children, and I doubt it'll be the last

This is like The Carters controversy; she was being a little silly, but people totally blew it out of proportion because they're pressed or God knows what's wrong with their lives :air:

I think you’re misunderstanding. I don’t believe that she posted this picture to purposely cause controversy.

She’s so ignorant like no offense I like her older music but this is not the first time she’s done stuff that could blatantly offend black Americans. 5 pages and no one even mentioned the fact that she said the N word in the past when referring to kid, and it was posted on social media :awkney: a damn mess. I’m sure it’s unintentional but whew, get it together Madge.

And lowkey I’m really in awe at how out of touch a lot of GagaDaily is when it comes to race relations, especially in the US. :selena: I know most are not Americans in this thread, but honestly, do some research before you leave some comments. It doesn’t matter what ‘helper’ means or refers to in French culture or in other countries; this issue is obviously rooted in US history and thus, should be discussed in that context. Mess :selena:

Not really, you said you have a feeling she’s doing it on purpose, I simply disagree.

NONONONO

Oh God, please...

Just stop with the anti-Madonna crusade. If you honestly think there is something wrong with this photo, and you are calling Madonna racist, you either know nothing about Madonna, or you have a clear agenda.

This is a simple photo of a mother and her daughter. This is not a mess, and is definitely not thread worthy.

What is the world coming to when a white mother can't take a photo with her adopted black child doing a cute household task without people claiming it's a subtle slavery reference? Newsflash: white people should not have to live their lives in a constant state of walking on eggshells, being careful of everything they say and do while people of colour do not. That's not fair or equal. If you would see no issue if there was a white child in the photo instead, you should see no issue with a black child. You're not applying equal treatment if you think otherwise. I used to wear dresses like this as a kid and I'm white. It doesn't even look like a particularly old design, it's just a plain white child's dress. She doesn't even have on a little bandana or apron or anything else that insinutes a different time period. Is it insinuated that mothers should not dress their black daughters in white dresses because they might, possibly, perhaps look like a dress a slave maid wore years ago? Times have changed. It's the 21st century. Live in the now. Focus on the real problems in the here and now, not the ones that were outlawed years ago.

Yes, but it isn't in the cultural memory of the age range of most people on GGD. That's the important distinction here. And well, that was over 50 years ago. In 20 years or so, it'll be out of the cultural memory for the most part. And it certainly wasn't a common thing worldwide by the 50s/60s, just in America for the most part. It's hardly something that every white person from that era remembers the world over. And by the way, "the help" was used to refer to any hired household staff in general, no matter their colour. I've heard it used to refer to white staff as well. It's generally considered a dehumanising term now and most don't use it. "The help" and "helper" are two completely different phrases with different connotations. In this case, it's meant in the same way as "Santa's little helper" and I doubt you have a problem with that phrase.

Oh man, they won't understand why it can be insensitive, you are wasting your time (I think that colorblindness bullsh*t is a big part of it)

even though I don't think she's racist, she's just ignorant and I swear I cringe

People do understand why some would find it insensitive, they just personally don't believe it themselves, which is a big difference. There's no problem with explaining why you disagree and sticking by it.

The first incident you described is way worse, that's worth outrage. This innocent picture isn't.

Most of us aren't out of touch, we just don't think it's relevant to bring up race relations of the past that were outlawed years ago. Focus on the race relations now. I'm a woman and you won't hear me banging on about how once we weren't allowed to vote. We won the vote, so it doesn't need bringing up anymore, I focus on what's happening in the here and now, it's a waste of time dwelling on the past. And why do you assume that people haven't done research? Just because you don't agree with their beliefs doesn't mean they haven't researched. And I am looking at the word helper in an American context. The word means the same thing that it does in other cultures - totally innocent.
