Erotica 34,923
Greece has reached a deal on the name of its northern neighbour, which called itself Macedonia at the break-up of the former Yugoslavia. After 27 years of talks - and many protests - they have settled on the name Republic of North Macedonia, or Severna Makedonija in Macedonian. Greece had objected to the name Macedonia, fearing territorial claims on its eponymous northern region. It had vetoed the neighbour's bid to join Nato and the European Union. The new name will now need to be approved by the Macedonian people and Greek parliament. Azor Ahai 18,861
Finally, let's get this over with already! People in Greece keep having debates about the name ever since I remember myself.

John Wayne 4,527
There is a more possible chance of Act 2 leaking than Macedonia accepting the name. A mess.
edgy 6,918
All this over a name? I don't see Canada, Mexico and the rest of South America feuding with the United States over the term America ... But then again, who would want to be associated with that at this point?

It’s more of a territorial thing and also each country claming a historical person or a “thing” as theirs (ex. Macedonian claim Alexander the Great was Macedonian and vice verca)
Delulu Rogers 7,660
Mess at the title. I'm Greek and this hits close to home. The name Macedonia shouldn't even be used in their country's name. Ridiculous after 27 years this still hasn't been resolved
ctherainbow 3,162
"27 years". Who do both parties think they're kidding? The Macedonian/Greek contention over regional supremacy(and hence everything else)has been an issue since post-Alexander and the Hellenic diaspora, when Macedonia declined as an empire and the resurgent Greeks wanted to use Alexander as claim to the rest of the divided empire. I'm shocked though, that both parties, after centuries of occupation by foreign empires, are still pressed about this. Though I suppose having your country ripped away by the Romans and Ottomans, among others, would make you extra territorial about everything. I'm talkin' 'bout forever, baby.
