Canada Now Has North America's Biggest Natural Gas Shale Formation

Canada has sizable shale Oil reserves which are currently growing but likely would never reach as high as the United States. Canada's main Oil Supply will likely remain the Oil Sands

 

However when it comes to Natural Gas the new estimates put the Canadian Montney Shale formation in Alberta with 449 Trillion Cubic Feet of recoverable Natural Gas surpassing the Marcellus shale formation in the US which has 410 Trillion cubic feet as the largest in North America

 

Those 2 formation have most of North America's Natural Gas. The 3rd largest Gas Formation the Haynesville by comparison has only 74 Trillion Cubic Feet and Utica the 4th largest only 34 Trillion.

@Woolfsmck ur into shale so curious about ur opinion here. Natural gas will be good to rely on while we phase away from Coal for power production as it pollutes only half what coal does and it's cheap as well

 

And figures this formation is mostly in Alberta. I don't get how that Province ended up with the largest reserves of every valuable resource

 

But a little bit of the shale formation does go into British Columbia as well so let's see British Columbia try to block this resource like they try to block everything else the Nation can make money off extracting

I mean natural gas is great for heating homes and water and also a lot of boats may make a transition to natural gas to comply with international 2020 new laws on emmissions

 

Also some places where wind and solar may not be reliable enough to give up fossil fuels completely natural gas is still cleaner than Oil and Coal

 

So I don't think it's as simple as "it has to go". I think it can be a great tool in transition to clean energy

The most extreme environmentalists in Canada that are anti everything and have unrealistic expectations of how quickly we can ditch all carbon, most of them live in the Province of British Columbia. They are also the first Province to have the Green party partially in power (they are in power indirectly right now thru coalition with the left-wing NDP)

 

Alberta it's next door neighbor Province is the most conservative Province in Canada and they also happen to have the highest Concentration of resources like Oil (97% of Canada's largest reserves), Coal, Natural Gas etc in the Country and want to keep extracting it

 

Alberta needs British Columbia's coast line for easier export tho so not everything has to be sold to only the US which limits customer base and we sell resources at a discount as a result

 

British Columbia as a result has a lot of power indirectly to make projects difficult to go forward

 

An oil pipeline from Alberta to BC that had Federal Approval got so much opposition in BC and legal challages to stall it that the company that planned to build it abandoned the Project and the Federal Government ended up using tax payers money to buy the project and build it themselves. They payed $4.5 Billion for it plus another $6 Billion to finish the pipeline

 

BC and Alberta are always at odds for stuff like this. Recently Alberta threatened to cut off BCs Oil and Gas supply as a pressure tactic to get them to stand down but they ended up never following thru that threat
