I agree. It is most criticized by many J-Pop fans. I mean, look at Ayumi Hamasaki channel, many of her MVs there are only 2 minutes or so. Like, what even?! We cannot hear the full song that way.

the most popular J-Pop act right now is BABYMETAL because they are not doing the regular J-Pop label tactics. AFAIK they also connects with their abroad fans. And they toured abroad often too!

OMG I love BABYMETAL!

I've been really interested in japanese culture this year, tried seeing the new releases of J-pop but didn't like anything. If someone knows a great artist/band to suggest...

It depends, there are wide array of artists you can explore. Japanese using the label J-Pop freely. No matter of the genres, if they are mainstream, it will be labeled as J-Pop.

If you enjoyed all female bands or just bands, there are lots of them too. The most popular are like Ore Ska Band, couple of their songs have been used as themes for Naruto, so you may be familiar with their sounds. Also, L'Arc~En~Ciel and GACKT are very popular too.

Like some of you just said, they sell MV with CD & release 2mins version on utube :neyde: some of them even country restricted. You cant never see artist like Namie old MV unless some fan upload it. They focus on JP market & sometime Taiwan. Namie is retiring, Ayu flop since Party Queen, I dont like any of Kumi new release except some ballad :madge:

And Utada just stays mellow since Sakura Nagashi :triggered:

I need something like travelling or such from her again, but looks like not gonna happen soon.

this is the typical J-POP we get these days from the most successful JPOP group right now

I like it but it's way too childish for the western audience, it just doesn't have worldwide appeal, but Japanese music industry doesn't seem to care to much about global audiences since JAPAN is big enough to sustain its own market

meanwhile KPOP is just western dance music with korean people , that's why it's so easy to get into it

I wish the old JPOP could come back tho

Utada Hikaru's music was the best thing that could have happend to humanity, we need more music like that these days, eiother from her or a new JPOP act

Actually, if you look at the popular acts during the 90s when it was huge overseas, they were following very R&B and grunge/rock during those times which were on trend. Then the whole idol act started becoming very popular and they were not what pop lovers are used to so it went downhill from there. I mean, AKB48 and the countless groups that emulates it baffles me. I still listen to many japanese music these days, but more on the alternative side like cero, Cicada, Mondo Grosso etc. But all people see these days are Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Perfume which is not representative of the vast japanese music scene.

I still stan Hikki, I'm also a fan of Ayaka's music. I also follow Sandaime J Soul Brothers though they are getting boring with their soulless house music but I just gawk at their hotness in their MVs.

Same

I'm perched for her new album though, but I don't see her going back to something like Distance or Deep River.

Comis Explorer is an amazing album, but Perfume's latest didn't really wow me

The latest J-Pop act I got into to (that's new) is Natsume Mito

J-Pop died just like K-Pop did

I like dancin', and ponies....

Heavy Rotation is THAT BOP tho. They're are also about 5 - 8 years ago. It has gone even more downhill since then, and I didn't actually think it was possible that J-pop could just totally vanish into obscurity like that...

Luxe Ford

A friend if mine was obsessed with Japanese boy bands. Mainly the ones from the Johnny & Associates agency. So, mostly because of convnience, I let myself be drawn in to it. I had to or we'd have nothing to talk about.

I even decided to have a favourite band, Kanjani Eitu from Osaka. And when Johnnies decided, for some strange reason, to launch the duo Tegomass (from the band NEWS) in Sweden and release their single exclusively here I went to a  bizzare performance + meet & greet with them. Fainting and crying weeaboo teens everywhere!

I don't know why (south) Korean pop culture came to dominate.

Maybe they embrace western culture more than the Japanese so it's easier for us to grasp? Maybe it's their obsession with plastic surgery and exotic skincare products that creates a sudden urge for western girls to slather on "essences" containing snail goo like their future depended on it?

I was forced to follow these guys since they were like ten, but just had to order this one. It gives me a thrill like a rollercoaster!
