NFL to force players to stand for pledge if on the field

ATLANTA -- NFL owners have unanimously approved a new national anthem policy that requires players to stand if they are on the field during the performance but gives them the option to remain in the locker room if they prefer, it was announced Wednesday.

The policy subjects teams to a fine if a player or any other team personnel do not show respect for the anthem. That includes any attempt to sit or kneel, as dozens of players have done during the past two seasons to protest racial inequality and police brutality. Those teams also will have the option to fine any team personnel, including players, for the infraction.

"We want people to be respectful of the national anthem," commissioner Roger Goodell said. "We want people to stand -- that's all personnel -- and make sure they treat this moment in a respectful fashion. That's something we think we owe. [But] we were also very sensitive to give players choices."

They have the option to stay in the locker room during the anthem. How sad. Had they embraced the activism and what it stood for, this situation would have been resolved. Instead, we will continue the battle.

This isn't surprising to be honest.

They received a significant amount of backlash from middle America and decided to do what could be ultimately most profitable for them (in terms of viewers and sponsorship retention).

Why should we compromise when the other side thinks that being able to express yourself and what you believe in is what should be censored? Yeah yeah, "private enterprise" etc. etc., but patriotism is often really just nationalism and can be blind, which is why people cannot see that clearly, "protesting" and asking for better treatment is an integral part of the American process and way of being, there's nothing disrespectful about it, its part of the entire reason this country exists  It's more about being alarmed by challenges to the status quo by those in power how I see it. 

I'll never understand the controversy behind saying "things are not perfect, let's try to fix them", because its such a rational position to take, but conservatives drum it up in the media as an attack on American values, a radical position, etc.

The point is you centrists and your "compromise" is one of the reasons this country is so messed up. We shouldn't compromise our rights so the NFL can be comfortable with its middle America audience its sickening.

This is false, like very much so  

LGBTQ+ community, women, immigrants, people of color, etc. are all fighting for their civil rights - the right to be treated equally under the law, not discriminated against and to not have freedoms infringed upon by the government, social organizations and private individuals.

The "Civil Rights Movement" helped black people out in the 20th century, and it wasn't even conclusive, as many of the benefits they gained are still incrementally and systematically denied; black people are still discriminated against en masse. Some laws "guaranteeing" and allowing literal, cold dry rights to black people did nothing, so arguing about "everyone having literally the same rights" really doesn't mean anything.
