I don't understand why she's trying to make all of that Asian imagery happen. The Chun Li reference in the song is so trivial and to name the song after it is just so random. It just doesn't work for me

Right I’m confused. How is THIS not “cultural appropriation”?....:oprah:

Oh, so other minorities can “appropriate” cultures, just not white people. Got it. Makes sense.  :ladyhaha:

If this were true black people wouldn't get up in arms about latinos "appropriating" their culture as well. They feel they can speak spanish in their verses and use latino music for samples but god forbid cardi b reach the top of the charts in place of an african american female.

If this were literally anyone else they would be burned at the stake, but somehow Nicki always gets a pass for being culturally offensive in ways other people cant. and there is not argument to that statement because its the goddamn truth.

As somebody who identifies as Asian-Pacific Islander, I'm not as offended as much as I just don't get the weird homogenized Asian imagery.

It looks cool, but it's hollow, and kind of veers into the line of appropriation tbh. Obviously it's not outright racist or offensive, but it just seems almost exclusively aesthetic-based.

I know Nicki claims ancestral Asian heritage, but it's not like this is positive political representation lol

Cultural Appropriation gets more nuanced once it's between two (or more) minority groups.

I think anybody can be guilty of cultural appropriation. Yes, it should be acknowledged that white people hold a particular place in this context, considering social power dynamics- but, I don't think that excuses other POC from being guilty.

In this case, Asian imagery, and Asian people used as imagery, are often done so in very hollow and exclusively aesthetic ways. That is why the argument of Asian and Pacific Islander fetishization exists- Asian imagery and people are constantly objectified and subjugated.

Not a fan. But didn't see anything controversial or disrespectful to someone's culture. Also it's a freaken video game characer! I see people cosplaying characters all the time, never hear that being called cultural appropriation. I'm Mexican and Russian, I dressed up as Ash Ketchum from Pokemon for Halloween years ago, was that me being culturally insensitive? People are so dramatic. I can' believe I'm defending an artist I don't like or respect.

I hope Gaga can serve videos like that for LG6. No more MR/Joanne simplicity. Give us concepts, avant-garde, fashion, craziness again. Give the gays everything they're craving for.

Well, it just goes out to show what's happening when you're working with an artist who isn't pushing you :reductive:

Funny how a similar thing happened between Nicki and RedOne... it's like nobody's willing to give their best with her.

I may come across as mean, but I think it actually says a lot about the girl's work ethic.
