A new poll found that a majority of Americans support Medicare For All

The healthcare system supported by Bernie Sanders and many liberal-leaning Democrats has begun gaining steam with more Americans, according to a new poll. 

The poll, from the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonpartisan health policy think tank, found that: 

59% of respondents supported a Medicare-for-all healthcare system in which all Americans would get coverage through a government program like Medicare or Medicaid. 

Moving to a public-option model, under which people could sign up for the Medicare-like program, would be even more popular. 

About 75% of the public would favor a program framed as a public option for anyone who wants it.

There is, as expected, a partisan split in the polling on Medicare-for-all: 

75% of Democrats support the idea along with 58% of independents. 

But just 36% of Republicans are in favor of the idea. 

But, when asked about the optional expanded Medicare program, or "Medicare-for-some," support among GOP voters jumped to 64%. 

While the Medicare-for-all option is still a difficult sell for lawmakers, 16 Democrats signed on to Sanders' bill to implement such a program in the US back in September. Additionally, many business leaders and politicians have been floating the idea for a single-payer system, which would see the government fund a vast majority of medical coverage.

I always thought that everyone, almost everywhere had healthcare. 

It's crazy that a country like the US doesn't. 

A "first world" country where you need to pay for your health and your education.

Same. So confused when I came to the US and all this healthcare stuff going around. I thought the government paid for it

The United States "dream" is sadly not the way people think it is. We are overworked, underpaid, living in the best of our means and still in debt, if you get sick good luck getting time off without being fired, good luck also being able to afford thousands and thousands and thousands on hospital visits. They own you for life here.  But you are free...to be judged and judge and mock and be mocked and maybe suffer police brutality and possibly be killed in schools with machine guns.  

 

But it's lovely in the summer.  

 

Seriously, I'm thankful to have been raised here and every place has it's issues. It ABSOLUTELY could be worse. But for AMERICA, land of the free, the ball has been dropped for a long time and we the voters are doing everything we can to try and fix it.

I have health issues.  I'm one that Obamacare saved....saved my life no kidding! Sure it had problems but tossing it with zero solution was insanity. If it weren't for my means, I'd be on Medicaid (where government DOES pay).   It's all so complicated here when it could be super easy.

I mean yeah. Even most "republicans" and "conservatives" don't fully agree with the craziness and corruptness of Republicans in Washington, they are just misled to vote for them time after time.

They just like to not acknowledge it.

Most people also support comprehensive immigration reform and gun control, but again  Republicans won't act on it because a huge part of their marketing strategy in order to secure a stable base comes from manipulation of facts and appealing to basal human instincts (xenophobia, racism, etc.)

The Democrats should run on Medicare For All, it gives everyone coverage and is cheaper. Great idea and a lot of people support it!

Totally agree. That's why we need to nominate a progressive candidate in 2020 that will make it the main conversation of the election.

Canada's healthcare system is only 70% Government Funded and many segments of the system are privatized and must be covered by insurance or out of own pocket

It is a cheaper model than what we're currently doing, and would allow the government to bring drug prices down. The up-charge for profit is just ridiculous these days.

Doctors would have to take paycuts tho

 

Part of what makes healthcare so expensive in the US is that doctors make so much more than everywhere else

 

Here in Canada a family physician for example would be making $100,000 to $130,000 a year(depending on the Province and the exact qualifications and hours worked etc)

 

I know in the US many doctors wages surpass $200,000 depending on a variety of factors

 

But it allows for more fairness in society. Healthcare costs for everyone is lower, other public workers like teachers get paid better than in the US (obviously still less than a doctor would)
