Teachers Outraged By Pension Bill Passed By Kentucky Senate hidden in a Sewage Bill.

Several Kentucky teachers won't be going to work Friday after the state legislature approved changes to their pension on Thursday.

Educators, who are furious over the pension issue, called out of work in protest. At least nine [I’ve been notified around 30 today] counties have canceled school, the Kentucky Democrats tweeted early Friday.

State leaders say it's critical to fix the pension crisis, which ranks as one of the worst in the US.

But in a surprise move, elements of Senate Bill 1 were tucked into another bill, Senate Bill 151, which had been about sewage services. And the new, nearly 300-page Senate Bill 151 passed both the state House and Senate Thursday to the chagrin of teachers and retirees who crammed into the Capitol.

There will be no changes to the annual cost of living adjustments, which will remain at 1.5%.

New hires will have to enter a hybrid cash balance plan, in which members contribute a specified amount into their account.

Limits the number of sick days teachers can put toward their retirement.

The fact that they’re putting education so low on their priority list... what did they think would happen? I hope more teacher protests arise out of this. Enough is enough. Kids are literally our future, yet politicians seem to care more about their current (inflated) paychecks than paying teachers a liveable wage and securing the education of our kids.

Kentucky is my state, we have some of the worst economic, educational, and rights policies because we have crap legislators. Indiana is the only state that's manages to seem worse than us, and that's just sad.

Cost of living, poverty, all sort of issues in this state and no one is working to fix them, we have the sort of republicans that like to steal money from every little issue they can while ignoring the big issues that make them rich while the rest of have to work our asses off just to make ends meet.

Awesome! Now the teachers can shutdown the public education system in that state and show the legislature that the time that is will be allowed is over.

Kentucky is known the world over for 2 things. Fried chicken and dumb folk. I'm in a remote part of the UK and it's common knowledge here. Seeing education so neglected isn't a surprise. Seeing them correctly spell it? Shook.

With us somehow shifting over to a red state over the years, I have a hard time seeing that happening.

Someone once told me that in Kentucky, for every one decent person, there’s two deplorables; for every one smart person, there are two dumb ones; and for every one serving of vegetables, there’s two servings of fried chicken. I thought they were just being low key rude and hella exaggerating... but now... :selena:
