I mean they always somehow stay looking rich and powerful, and all the other countries can do is just give them the look. America would face concequences eventually tho. It's rare for Countries to default that's why they get low interest rates cuz they are seen as a safe investment

EDIT: On topic, I've always pondered about the next "crash" like the recession of '08 with the housing market to be Student Debt. Is that a possibility? I'm only in the social sciences so I suck at econ. The next crash, or one of the next few, will be much worse I think

There's no way they'll be able to pay it off or reduce it enough. I can only see it end one way, but I hope I'm wrong By "room" I mean where they literally can't make the bad decision anymore Eventually the amount of money they need to raise in order to pay off old bonds will rise so much that yields will have to rise substantially to attract enough funding. Higher yields raise the cost of other forms of credit as the financial system is interlinked What would happen is mortgage rates, car loans etc going thru the roof if Government rates shot up because Corporate bonds complete with Government bonds for funding That's why there's a limit to how much the US can borrow despite what some say. The tricky part is no one knows what that limit is and that limit can vary depending on economic circumstances The Government could make all its payments and still start or worsen a crisis of difficulty raising the money results in a spike in rates If 10 year bonds for instance were in their 5% historical average the US would be in a crisis already

Care about your country and fellow Americans. Never vote Republican. The military budget is also slightly higher than the US trade deficit... These hundreds of thousands of soldiers do nothing industrially productive but they consume food and other goods like everyone else... In addition to that, big Government deficits result in more money going into economy than you take out of it giving the economy the means to buy beyond its productive means So Of course the US has a trade deficit... Trump conviniently blames it on "bad trade deals"
