I just started high school back in August 2011. So Rihanna, Britney (with I Wanna Go mainly), Gaga, Adele, and Katy were dominating. So was Maroon 5 and LMFAO.

You would have LOVED my high school days. Britney was ginormous... I remember all the guys in my school thought she was so hot. Always the debate of who was hotter... Britney, Xtina, or Jessica.

Xtina had the best chart success, Britney selling her albums, and Jessica had good success with her first album. All their videos were played on MTV's TRL a lot.

Haha yes we must be the same era. It was funny for my junior prom I remember a girl saying oh I hate that girl Britney but that hit me baby one more time is so damn catchy!

I never really bought into any of that. I loved rock/alternative music back then. 311, Offspring, Goo goo dolls, Tool, Live ,etc.

In my school, there was a LOT of Adele talk last year.

Gaga died off too and Brit... :rip:

Katy gets a mention every once in a while because of her boobs.

Rihanna is just there.

Bloody Mary

I believe this is not off topic, so I'll post it here:

ALAN BURNS AND ASSOCIATES presentation of Top 40 audience research TODAY (7/27) suggests that the format's recent ratings surge is related to Hip-Hop's decline. CEO ALAN BURNS commented that "Hip-Hop's appeal to women declined from 2010 to 2011, and then nearly disappeared in 2012. As Top 40 has played less Hip Hop in reaction, the format's numbers have grown. Hip-Hop interfered with mother/daughter listening, but TODAY's poppier sound has broadened the format’s appeal."

"Top 40 is always more successful when it isn't too extreme," continued BURNS.

While Pop and Pop-rhythm sounds continue to dominate popularity among Top 40 listeners, another change that has occurred is that the popularity of music by artists like KELLY CLARKSON, PINK and ADELE has increased in appeal. "That's helping both mainstream Top 40 and Hot AC," noted BURNS.

Hip-Hop is declining as Top 40 is gaining listeners. This is great news for Gaga (and all the other pop girls) since she will be releasing a new single in a few months.

Very interesting!!

I hear it a lot on radio now. And it is kind of addictive and very different from everything else on radio. Maybe it is going to take a minute for people to adjust to a new sound.

That fits my observations too. It's a problem for Rihanna and Nicki having big crossover hits, because now they have to choose between urban and pop radio. The mystery is why hip-hop ever appealed to white women. All the hip-hop on Top 40 was the main factor is me listening to alternative and classic rock radio for years.
