Actors Dawn French and Hugh Grant have led tributes to their former co-star Emma Chambers, who has died aged 53. Known for playing Alice Tinker in The Vicar of Dibley, Doncaster-born Chambers also had roles in Notting Hill and a Martin Chuzzlewit adaptation.

Chambers died from natural causes on Wednesday evening and would be "greatly missed", her agent John Grant said. "Emma created a wealth of characters and an immense body of work," he added. She leaves a husband, fellow actor Ian Dunn.

French, who starred in The Vicar of Dibley alongside Chambers for 13 years, paid tribute to a "very bright spark and the most loyal and loving friend anyone could wish for".

"I will miss her very much", she said, while also posting a picture of the pair on Twitter.

It's so sad.

So many memories of growing up with this iconic sitcom as a kid, I still love it.

Hoping the BBC put an episode on in tribute to her soon

This celebrity death actually hit me really hard than many of the other stars we have lost recently.

She wasn't an oscar-winning actress, nor a rock star, but she really did have an innocent charm in her performances.

It also shatters my hopes of a reunion with Dawn French, they were classic gal pals.

I have been hit quite badly by this. She was my favourite airhead of all time. When we were near Somerset my family used to come out with Alice's lines.. not catchphrases, just random lines. We were all huge huge fans. This is terrible.

The Vicar of Dibley was one of my absolutely favourite shows. My grandma showed it to me when I was young and I've been hooked ever since.

Such a sad time that Emma has passed. :(
