geopang 4,831
It was Gaga at her finest artistically. The most "Gaga" she's ever been. If anything, Joanne ruined Gaga. But that's just my opinion.

So it is meant to look awkward, almost ghastly, like plastic surgery gone wrong - but brave enough to be cool about it. She was made that way. Thank you so much for explaining it to me. I love that concept, and it makes perfect sense contextually with the album. Now I can finally look at that cover with appreciation.

Pray4FameGa 3,141
Yeah I definitely agree it transformed her from the it girl, the mysterious pop diva with infectious hits, to an all dominating statement making Madonna like figure. It was too much for the GP, and she was doing it with this 80s gothic rock sound. The Album is so so eccentric, and not in s sexy trendy way like the fame was. Having said that I blasted BTW the other night and it really bangs. Even though it did transform her image, I do think the BTW single era was her most iconic. It was a real pop culture moment the way MJ and Madonna had them.

If there's a solid concept behind it, then I could learn to like it more because I can't look at that cover. Nothing is done randomly by Gaga when it comes to the imagery she releases Let's take the motorbike/head fusion aside, look at the font - it looks like an 80's or late 90's crappy computer generated logo. No doubt it was Gaga's intention for it to look like this, otherwise she wouldn't have placed it. I was always saddened that she did not use the first BTW era image released as a cover: I absolutely love this and gives a strong 'George Michael' vibe to it which is truly iconic. Obviously she could have cropped the bottom half and it would have still worked. Add to that the BTW single font for 'Gaga': And there you have it! A classic, effortless look. But Gaga works in mysterious ways and the existing BTW cover made people talk more i suppose even though so far i mostly see it in 'Worst album covers' lists. This post just makes me appreciate BTW wayy more. Gaga really took the risk and created something that was polarizing at the time but will be remembered for years. BTW was important to a lot of people and like Gaga said, if she could touch the soul of just one person, then she would've done her job. Quality over quantity any day, any hour, any millennium i think we all haveto be little chartsters and little monsters. we need both kind of thoughts in order to keep an artist power to keep producing music we love love sucess and love music do not need to be conflicted kindest regards

Being little chartsters are nothing if you cannot back up by supporting the releases. And being supportive fans just by saying "I wish you the best on the chart!" to teh artists mean nothing, it is like when your best friend got into life threatening situation and all you can do is just say "I wish you the best" when the clearly contacting you for help. Fans need to realize they need to do the real thing and not just talk. Look at Swifties for example. Her albums always get to 1 Million sales even in streaming era because her fans keep buying her CDs regardless, not just empty talking. metalguru 1,553
Oh my god please no negativity over BTW. What a classic album. I still get chills when I think about BTW photo sessions or the hospital scene in MTN video or when she walks slowly when the music starts in BTW video.. She was.. Godlike Ga. I am so happy that she took all the risks with BTW and ARTPOP. Otherwise, who needs another typical pop singer. BUTTTTTT. I have one big regret about BTW. The cover. I hate the cover. There were so many great Nick Knight photos from the same shoot. Why did she go with that? IF the album's future legacy is in danger, it is just because of the cover. I hope she releases "10th Year" edition or something in the future with a shorter tracklist and with a different cover. How I wish she went with this as a cover. Very otherworldly. Reminds me of Nico's classic, The Marble Index. And this look.. Oh God. I cried hard when I first saw this last look of the video and I don't cry at all. Was it a reference to Michael Jackson? Madonna? Or my theory is, she cries for all the people who died of AIDS :(((
FATCAT 60,084
lmfao her hip breaking and fake bitches on her old team "ruined" her innocence. BTW is godly, thanks. This kitten over here (meow)

MaybeKermit 4,964
that's completely true... It started way before ARTPOP. I remember in highschool EVERYBODY was loving TF/TFM, "basic bitches' talking about the Paparazzi video premiere etc, they LOVEDDD Bad Romance. Then BTW happened, and people just didn't get it. I remember that my friends were bailing on her 1 by 1: they hated the Judas-video, hated the face prosthetics, called her too 'demonic and satanic'... They also didn't like the music: it was too dark and sounded too goth. I think this also counts for whole Europe: they just didn't like the dark aesthetic... HOWEVER: people do appreciate her again thanks to Joanne: some of my friends of whom I never thought would stan her, are addicted to Joanne and are really starting to become monsters LG6 will be the true make or break... and I know we say this with every album (just like ARTPOP was supposed to make her popular again - Joanne was supposed to be her big comeback , ...), but LG6 will be the true test: now she HAS won the GP back (kind of), she has proven that she's not just a one-trick-pony who does nothing else but wear crazy costumes, and that she has a killer voice and stage presence, etc. Just hope soooo hard that she and her team will FINALLY deliver a decent era again where they FULLY COMMIT to one plan. And to finally make the GP identify her as a LEGEND and an ARTIST.
synched 734
Gags wanted everything to be super "artistic" and "otherworldly" back then. Even before ARTPOP and BTW. She just had to make EVERYTHING super weird and "artistic" so she made a dark-heavy video for a song like Alejandro, a light catchy summer bop, with steven friggin' klein. No one liked that video from th GP and everyone was SO weirded out. Alejandro was huge in my country and all of my friends were bopping to it 24/7 and then the video came and... Let's be honest. She shouldn't have made a video like that for a song like Alejandro. It just doesn't make sense and makes her look like a try-hard. Even though I love the video and it's aesthetic, it did not fit the song AT ALL. I agree with most people here saying that it all started with the Alejandro video tbh. Phoenix 17,395
Her hip ruined her career. From that it all went downhill, and also good people leaving and bad ones coming in her life. Like Donatella f.e. who is a bad influence, look at grammy 2018 comments everyone calling gaga a plastic granny, and she does look a bit so. You cant have success if you are surrounded by people who say everything u do is great, criticism by your people is needed. And also on top of it her over the top bull**** with ARTPOP and joanne, like release an album, stop making it such a big deal with these over the top stories behind it. Even her grandma was over it in the documentary. 💎
brit4ever 2,034
I remember being scared of the BTW MV when I was 10 and that's why only watched it once all the way untill 2-3 years ago. Also when Judas MV was released I was on a holiday with my family and me and my sister were sitting in the lobby of the hotel playing games and than Judas played on the TV and we were both disturbed. I now appreciate BTW, but back than when I was still GP the era was too extra, it was too much. People were over Gaga's crazy outfits after the meat dress, but she still pushed them all the way to the ARTPOP era and than it hit her. I remember how when Bad Romance's MV premiered when I was in 4th grade a girl in my class had an iPhone and played it on YouTube(literaly the first MV I watched on YouTube ) and all 27 of us in class were watching it and we were all like WOW, but with BTW I remember my friends Gaga a clown and weirdo and that her music sucks now and I also tought so. It wasn't untill recently when I realised what she did with that album and how special is to a lot of people, it's not my favorite album of hers, but I appreciate it, despite it ending her mainstream career.
